Play-by-Forum Darkening of Mirkwood Campaign

Post by Madhaus » Thu Jul 23, 2015 5:18 pm

Good morning,

I am new to The One Ring -I purchased the LMG in April, 2015-, but I have been a GamesMaster since 1993, having read, played, run, and/or written over forty-five (45) unique role-playing systems. I have also run Play-by-Forum games since 2003, most particularly Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play 2nd Edition. You might imagine I have a bit of experience with running RPGs. For The One Ring, I have a great deal of enthusiasm, as it is the first game since Earthdawn, in 1993, that has truly piqued my interest, and I am ready to run this.

At present I have two players very interested in beginning the game, and I am looking for at least one more before I'll kick it off, though I would entertain a total maximum of seven (7) players, first-come-first-served. The goal is to begin this game as soon as all immediate interest has been answered and characters built, but not before at least three(3) players have joined.

I am using the nine cultures outlined in the LMG and the Heart of the Wild supplement, though I've created -or at least modified existing- backgrounds for Wild Hobbits and Woodmen of Mountain Hall. Rangers of the North and High Elves of Rivendell are not allowed in the beginning of the game, though they will be allowed once I feel our party is nearing the advanced level of those cultures, and/or it makes sense to add them to the story. As further supplements come out, I will investigate their addition as soon as possible, and will allow players to decide if they would prefer to begin with a new character at that time.

My intent is to stick strictly with the rules, as written, though house rules may come about, as necessary, to supplement or modify extant rules for the sake of our game. I've simply found nothing in the rules I feel needs to be modified, as yet.

Anyone desiring to come play The One Ring needs to be aware that I will be running the Darkening of Mirkwood campaign, beginning with The Marsh-bell in the LMG, and I intend to work in adventures from both Tales of Wilderland and Ruins of the North, as well as any other home-spun personal or external adventures I feel will make sense. So, I would ask you to not have read any of that material. I also want to keep the posting tempo up, constant, so we can tell and enjoy a good story, together. Those who fail to keep up a good pace of writing on forums -as it is not at the tabletop-, as a group, will soon lose that game, period.

(NOTE: My game will concern a mixture of the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien, the father of Middle Earth, the tales told in Peter Jackson’s movies, and those built for this role-playing game by Francesco Nepitello, the author of The One Ring, and while I will strive to remain as close to the original sources as possible, cinematic influence, and those from the RPG may have an effect on the game in places where I feel it would better honor the story we, as a group, are trying to tell.)

All of that being said, I have multiple feelers out for players, now, not just here, though for those from here who are interested in finding a group, take a look here... http://www.wolvesau.net/wh/fantasy/viewforum.php?f=54 .

I am interested. However, I'm afraid that I don't fit in your restrictions because I read all of the One Ring Core Rulebook, including The Marsh-bell.

I realise that this may be simple economics at work, but I would advise getting the Revised Rulebook, it makes things much easier to find.

As I'm currently running The Darkening of Mirkwood, I don't qualify as a player. In fact, if I can give you another unsolicited piece of advice... I'd rather have a dozen players that write well and "get" Tolkien that are spoiled on the adventure (since there's so much to customize I don't see it as a problem) than three players who are unspoiled but less suited for the game.

Was it just the Marsh-bell?

Yes, I already have it, thank you.

Yeah, that's not elitist at all. So, please allow me to give you a piece of advice, since neither of us knows one another, and you seem vociferous about the absolute right of your advice... don't give advice, please?

Whether you meant it or not, the ENTIRE impression I read and received from your post is very negative, elitist, and arrogant. All I'm trying to do is begin a game, and your input in this case was absolutely unnecessary. Thank you.

Zedturtle is just about the nicest and most helpful...and least arrogant...member of this community.

You, on the other hand, just got off to a very bad start by attacking him.

It's okay, a new user shouldn't know me from anyone else, and I'm sorry that my comments came off badly.

I was a bit confused by the LM being referenced, but I hope things go well for your game.

Yes, I have read only the revised rulebook, so I just read the marsh-bell.

Well, why is he trolling me? Answer me that. I posted a simple advertisement for starting a game, and he attacked me with his "...unsolicited advice...". I didn't ask for anyone's advice, I asked to start a game, that's all?

feck this forum, I'm done here... I don't care whether anyone comes or not, now. I will not put up with being bullied or attacked when I post something so very simple. Thanks a lot. Anyone who asks me if this forum is a good place to come will get a stern warning they will be attacked immediately.

I do believe we have all just witnessed the moment of birth of a Forum Legend.

This is a public forum and anyone is allowed to post; it may be a thread you started, but it's not "your" thread. I'd echo Glor's comments that Zed is incredibly mature and helpful.

"Unsolicited advice" is in absolutely no way an "attack" on you. He was offering to help you have a successful gaming experience and that is about as far from 'trolling' as one can get.
