Opening volleys ...which TN ???
Opening volleys ...which TN ???
Hi, I can't understand the rules to set TN during Opening Volleys.
Adventurer's book says that TN is 12 but when enemies reach melee it raises to 12+parry+shield.
Loremaster's book says that test for alla opening volleys is at TN 12 + parry + shield.
FAQs did not help me...
What am I missing?
THANKS!

Re: Opening volleys ...which TN ???
The base TN is 12, which is then modified by the enemy's Parry score. (Including a Shield, if applicable). Remember the Shields double their bonus for Opening Volleys only (something I consistently forget to do).

Re: Opening volleys ...which TN ???
TN for opening volleys is 12 + Parry rating of target + shield (if carried double this if the target is expecting an incoming ranged attack)
Re: Opening volleys ...which TN ???
Thanks, it's ok, but I can't understand the following statement then:
"The TN to attack a target involved in a fight using a
ranged weapon is equal to 12, plus the Parry rating of
the target, and modified by a shield if the target is using
one.
The high basic TN reflects the difficulty of aiming at a
moving target, while being careful not to hit another
companion engaged in the fight."
(Adventurer's book p. 159)
The TN is the same in the Opening volley and against an engaged enemy: can't find the sense of the second sentence

Re: Opening volleys ...which TN ???
In one case the high TN is due to the distance involved, in the other case it's due to the difficulty of shooting into melee. Not the best worded explanation, I'll grant you.

Oh...I see. The TN is the same, one for distance the other for melee engaged friends...zedturtle wrote:In one case the high TN is due to the distance involved, in the other case it's due to the difficulty of shooting into melee. Not the best worded explanation, I'll grant you.

Re: Opening volleys ...which TN ???
Enemies engaged with your friends are typically much closer than enemies during opening volleys. So in theory it's easier to hit them, but then it goes back up to 12 again because of the difficulty of not hitting your friends.
And, no, that doesn't mean there's a rule for lower TNs if enemies are closer but not engaged. For simplicity.
EDIT: Zed, shouldn't you be getting ready for GenCon?

Ahh, just wing it. Seriously though, after playing through a couple of different Con games, I think you will do great. You know your stuff man, and it is "your " stuff.
Re: Opening volleys ...which TN ???
Yeah, not to be the elitist arrogant jerk that I am, but I am (surprisingly) not very nervous about LMing at GenCon. But I promised everyone who played in one of my games something to take with them (a copy of Theft for the Theft game, a copy of The Ways of Magic for The Heart of Winter game), so I'm trying to make sure I've got all that situated.Wbweather wrote:Ahh, just wing it. Plus, things like stance cards and little name stands, and adversary cards and all that. Oh, and maps.
