Guardians of Gondor 3 - Life, or Death?

Post by TheMonarchGamer » Thu Aug 06, 2015 9:48 pm

Hi all, I know I've taken a while to posting the third session (partially because of missed sessions and partially because of my laziness). Anywho, here's session three, "Life or Death?", in which a new player (actually, an old timer who's been out of town for a while) joins the group. Oh, by the way, Odo Grimfast's player jokingly got after me the other day for not mentioning our running gag in the story. Odo took the "Beorning Honeycake" virtue during character creation, and I don't know how it got started, but we keep joking that the adventure is actually a cover for his chef celebrity tour

The game began with Ecthelion, the knight in charge of the small town where the players were being held in jail, coming to visit the players, and telling them that he had met with a wise fellow who convinced him to spare the lives of all. Unfortunately, honor and justice demanded that Hilde, at least, be excecuted. He said that she alone would be executed at sundown. The day came and went, and at sundown, Hilde, Odo, Arendir, and Wulfred were led out to the main square. Hilde was led up onto the platform.

Ecthelion had hardly finished fastening the noose around her neck when a loud scream came from one edge of the town: "Dawn Company! It's Dawn Company!." The scream, of course, was abruptly ended. Several Dawn Company infantry came charging out into the town, only to be stopped in their tracks by a mysterious hooded figure who quickly managed to slice through the first wave of soldiers; the new figure's hood fell back after a few moments to reveal an elven hunter.

Ecthelion let out a few choice words before he and his squires charged off in separate directions to defend, respectively, an old couple, a pregnant women with several children running around her, and a man who had tripped running away from one of the Dawn Company soldiers. That left Hilde, Odo, Arendir, and Wulfred, along with the new elven fellow, in quite a spot of trouble.

Odo ran to Hilde to pass her a knife under the covering fire of Wulfred, while Arendir and the new elf held off the first several infantrymen. After two rounds of combat, a Dawn Company knight also charged into the mix, but all the foes were swiftly dispatched.

The elven fellow, having seen that Hilde was to be killed, rounded swiftly on her, but she had already fled toward the stables, and Ecthelion, who had just returned, said not to chase after her. He led them all to dinner, where the elf introduced himself as Nalrandir Swiftsteel. Two characters who had been briefly introduced before also joined them at dinner: Celepharn and his wife, Iowen. Celepharn happens to be the king's treasurer, but also a bit of an adventure seeker who happened to be in town. Ecthelion reveals that wise man who convinced him to spare the lives (other than Hilde) of the party was a man named "Sharku," but Sharku has already continued on his way to a place called Duinparth. Ecthelion told them that the next morning, he was willing to help confirm if the body was indeed Findegil's body.

After dinner, Nalrandir confronted Arendir about the incident digging up the grave yard. Nothing much occurred, but during this exchange, Arendir did indeed recognize Nalrandir (although the reverse was not true).

That's basically where the session ended. This was our first taste of combat in TOR, and I think it worked out great. I think my group also responded relatively positively about it too. It did take a while, but being our first combat, that couldn't really be helped, I suppose. I should have the next session coming up today, tomorrow, or Saturday, and the newest session should be up Monday or Tuesday. Hope y'all enjoy till then, and as always, comments are welcome!

Oh, also, would anyone be interested in pictures of the battles in the future? I'm using miniatures and terrain to give a rough idea of the placement of characters, and I've passed out cards that I've found online for the stances. It worked pretty well for this session.

Ecthelion seems an odd choice of name for your knight, if only because Ecthelion II became the Ruling Steward of Gondor in TA 2953. It does make me wonder in what year your adventure takes place and if this could be the same Ecthelion (father of Denethor II, the twenty-sixth and last Ruling Steward of Gondor and father himself to Boromir and Faramir).

Interesting - I hadn't realized this, to be honest. The adventure takes place in TA 2948. Theoretically, its possible, and an interesting proposition to be sure. I'm probably just going to rule that its a coincidence (I have a pdf of Middle Earth names seperated by race/country, most of which are taken from the books or movies), but you never know! Thanks for the comment!
