Hmm a full party of dwarves from Erebor sent on a series of scouting missions by Balin ahead of his colonisation attempt.

Searches for maps of Moria from dwarven records in a variety of old locations referenced in the archives of Erebor
A 'Legendarium' listing some of the treasures
Travel to Rivendell to discuss with Elrond the links between Moria and the Elves of Hollin
Sneaking in to Moria to check for signs of life
Mapping suitable accommodation within Moria
Reporting back to Balin and planning follow-up activities

etc.

I'd only do it with dwarves though as I can't see them parting with the treasures of Khazad-dum lightly. Oh and then I'd heroically kill them all off when they return with Balin for the full conquest! Can't be letting news out early about the loss of Moria!

Drums... Drums in the Deep!
"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door," he used to say. "You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no telling where you might be swept off to."

Given that both Aragorn and Gandalf passed through Moria long before LotR, there could be an adventure there. "Quick! See if you can catch Thorongil to warn him of X". Imagine chasing Aragorn through Moria.

I agree that it seems like a stretch that Dwarves would ask non-Dwarves to explore Khazad-dum. Some more possible scenarios:
1) The request is made of a player-hero Dwarf, who is told to "take what companions you trust".
2) The White Council, aware that the Dwarves are thinking about re-opening Moria and possibly stirring up trouble, ask the heroes to quietly investigate.
3) As a variant of #2, Saruman wants somebody to look for the presence of "a trifle" in Moria before the Dwarves get around to re-opening it.

I am not wildly drawn to Moria, and all those sound like fun. (Especially chasing Aragorn, but that's less to do with Moria and more to do with Himself). Where's my boxed set for Moria? My kids would love to be curmudgeonly dwarves in spooky Moria.
