I'm really curious to know why Dwarves will name their settlement in Sindarin. The Khuzdul name would be quite likely secret (being Khazad Dum an exception), but they're usually happy to adopt the translation of the name in local speech (usually Westron). So we have the Iron Hills and the Lonely Mountain/Erebor (Erebor of course is the Sindarin name given originally by the Wood Elves).Otaku-sempai wrote: Hargrod
In T.A. 1982, after the Dwarves were driven from Moria by Durin's Bane, a group of Dwarves who were descended from the Blue Mountains established a new settlement in the Southern Ered Luin. Located south of the Emyn Romen, the line of hills extending eastwards from the southern range, they gave their new home the Sindarin name Hargrod (South Delving). Finding rich veins of iron ore, the Dwarves opened new mines; they also found other metals: copper, tin and even modest veins of gold. The Dwarves of Hargrod trade their metalcrafts with Elves of the Grey Havens, the Hobbits of the Shire and the few Men of Eriador who still dwell in the region.
You've got it exactly right. I'm no expert on Neo-Khuzdul so I'll take your word about Farak Gunûd. The Sindarin name is due to the nearness of Elven neighbors and the Westron translation would indeed be South Delving in English.Arthadan wrote:I'm really curious to know why Dwarves will name their settlement in Sindarin. So I guess closer neighbours of Hargrod would be the Elves of the Grey Havens and the Dwarves would call it South Delving/Hargrod same as they do with the Lonely Mountain/Erebor. And in Neo-khuzdul *I think* it would be Farak Gunûd (Southern Underground Halls).
Now back to wait for Horselords of Rohan...
