Prohibition and Exlcusion and fatigue

Post by MasterSmithwise » Fri Nov 13, 2015 7:25 am

The dwarf spell Prohibition and Exclusion allows the dwarf (and indirectly the rest of the company) to sleep safely. In the rule book under fatigue recovery it's stated and implied that it's not being "on the road" that prevents you from recovering from fatigue, but that it's unsafe. So, does this spell allow the player to sleep safely and therefore recover fatigue it it's used?

I'd say no. The spell warns you of danger - it doesn't prevent it! Mirkwood is still as dangerous even if you have a magical guard. But I would definitely give a large bonus on awareness checks for noticing danger in time.

No, I wouldn't consider it the same as a "prolongued rest" for recovering Fatigue and Endurance.

As Dunkelbrink said, the spell warns you of dangers, but doesn't avoid them. That can't be considered the same as sleeping in a soft and warm bed, protected by a wall and a city militia.

I agree with the others, and I would add that whatever the rules say about sleeping in a safe place as opposed to on the road, a large part of the fatigue of travelling is surely because it's harder to get a good night's sleep on the ground or in a tree or cave, as opposed to in a proper bed indoors.

I seem to remember the Hobbits complaining a lot about tree-roots sticking into them and suchlike in the early parts of LOTR. That seemed to go away, though, once they had a chance to spend some Advancement points; presumably they'd raised their Travel skill to a more reasonable level! ;)

I think part of the reason one doesn't sleep as well when travelling is that - even when others in the party are assigned watch - the rest of the party probably sleeps with "one eye open". Like Falenthal alluded to, that wall and city militia allow one to sleep a lot deeper, even if one is sleeping in the wild on a stack of mattresses. :)
Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

Besides, that spell must be cast by a dwarf at the camp. And everybody knows that dwarves snore deeply during sleep.
That broken spell is a protection and a damnation, all at the same time.

Haha! I should wake the company one night only to explain that the dwarf was snoring. And literally say nothing else. Allow the players to be just as confused and dazed as their characters would be.

Been there. Been on the RECEIVING end of that by the LM. It was the singing elves being annoyed by a snoring dwarf. And the sleeping humans being bothered by BOTH of them making so much nocturnal noise. Made for a cool scene in the end  Damn primeval races....

Also, using that spell actually increases your danger level over time. Because dwarven magic is still magic and Eye Awareness goes up if it is used.

My High Elves with the Enemy of Sauron trait tend to notice when Eye Awareness goes up...they're paying attention to how much attention they're getting from ol' Annatar.
