My feeling and my LM interpretation was that it was an "outdoors" talent, that the "Night" would speak to the Beorning and help him spot things, and that it would not work underground (too mineral, darkness even during daytime and not linked to the night...), but I did not think of the Moon and if it were seen or not etc..
But I find the discussion very interesting! (I wanted to see what others felt, if they would have ruled like me or not etc.).

If it fails in the depths of the Mirkwood, then it explains a great deal of why the beornings can make no easy headway into the Mirkwood.Kurt wrote:I would say that the moonlight would be able to peer through the canopy in a large portion of the forest, even if only slightly. But you can play that it doesn't if you want.Elmoth wrote:That would leave most of Mirkwood out of the ability's reach as well, no?
Looking at it any another way does not make sense. If you allow the ability in the depths of a mine because it happens to be night outside why not have the ability active all the time. It's always going to be night somewhere on the planet right?
The words are in the book, you can read them however you choose.
Cheers,
Kurt

Or it could be that Mirkwood is just full of queer and fell things.aramis wrote: If it fails in the depths of the Mirkwood, then it explains a great deal of why the beornings can make no easy headway into the Mirkwood.
Once you start trying to ground powers in the presence of actual moonlight there's a slippery logical slope, as some of the discussion above illustrates. I don't think it's worth going there.
