Problem is that Smaug probably didn't have any Orcs around to snack on....maybe not even Men. He had to pile that stuff up somehow...

Maybe he got the remaining stragglers in Erebor to do it. When they finished their task, he ate them all and went into a 'food coma'. That always happens to me during Christmas celebrations ... the food coma that is ... not eating dwarves after they stack gold. ;)

Sure, but when you quoted me you left out the other method he could have used. And in Erebor he wouldn't have even had to use a cart; he could have just used his massive jaw like a front-end loader. If Smaug had actually eaten any of it surely it would have been melted into slag.

I think this is getting into one of those "down in the weeds, where the epic stories don't grow" kinds of things. Although I think there's some interesting stuff to think about... maybe hobgoblins are set aside because they've struck deals with the cold-drakes and fire-dragons to provide essential services without getting eaten (very often).

Maybe there are legions of undead servitors that the drakes keep around for the purposes of moving treasure.

Perhaps the will of a Dragon is so powerful that if you're not shielded by a magic ring you'll happily stack up treasure for the dragon and then crawl into his maw when he asks you to.

If he can eat gold it means he can pick it up. If he can pick it up he can put it down. In, say, a cart. That he can fly with.

Or have orcs load the cart for the promise of not being eaten.

Couldn't be that the Dwarves of Erebor did have a massive treasure vault and Smaug set his lair there?

As for moving treasures from Dale, he had claws.

Mind-controlled Dwarves are unlikely, as they are very resistant to any kind of magic and specially hard to be controlled (plus in The Hobbit such power is never attributed to dragons, seems to be just Glaurung or the most powerful ones).

About the Undead servitors host, don't get me started

He tried an army of Mannish ghosts, but it turned out they had an even harder time picking up corporeal gold. :-)

Turns out they appeared and disappeared, winking in and out as their very existence was debated by Tolkien scholars.
Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).
