Seeing in darkness (races)

Post by tigermuppetcut » Sun Dec 13, 2015 2:39 pm

Hi we're all off adventuring in Moria and need to know about who can see what.
Humans are obvious but what about other races, how well do they see in dim light, and what about total darkness? Thanks.

AFAIK, the only use of "infravision" in TOR is the Cultural Blessing of the Elves of Mirkwood that allows them to use their Favourite Attribute when sepending a Hope point in some skills if, among other criteria, they're underground.

Not even the High Elves have this or similar Blessing.
And as for the Dwarves, the Virtue "Durin's Way" gives them some benefits underground, but nothing directly related to infravision.

Another aspect that could be related to it is the Trait "Tunneling", which could allow for automatic succeses when underground where other characters would have a high TN or even no chance of rolling a skill (a Trait might allow to roll when otherwise there would be no chance to do so).

That said, and as far as my knowledge goes, no race can see in utter darkness or, for what matters underground:
In the chapter about Moria Gandalf says that not even Gimli could see in the Mines. And in The Hobbit, the goblins in Goblin Town carry torches. Even the Elves of Mirkwood have their underground realm lighted at all times. I'd say elves can see if they have the light of the moon and/or stars available, but not in other cases.

Much is made of Gollum's lamp-like eyes seeing in the dark. In The Hobbit the goblins chasing the dwarves in the goblin-tunnels put out their torches and "chose out their very quickest runners with the sharpest ears and eyes." Apparently goblins can see at least a little in the dark.
