Adventure Seed

Post by Glorelendil » Tue Dec 15, 2015 1:51 pm

Was just combing through the Hobbit looking for quotes to sprinkle in my Delving rules (yes...I'm back to that again) and came across this, regarding Goblins:
They did not hate dwarves especially, no more than they hated everybody and everything, and particularly the orderly and prosperous; in some parts wicked dwarves had even made alliances with them.
Wicked Dwarves allied with Goblins?

I want that campaign sourcebook.

We know from the description of the Battle of the Last Alliance that there were dwarves fighting along with Sauron's forces. This quote from Mîm (the forum user, not the petty dwarf!) explicitly says so.

And I like the idea developed in that same thread that one of the Eastern Dwarves Clans could have had a big influence in the Variags of Khand.

It also means that you can have Corrupted Eagles and Ents, which make for interesting escenarios.
And Good Dragons, wargs, crebain, spiders and orcs :P

Whoah, yeah. Makes me wonder how much of "All living things were divided in that day" is poetic license, or what "living things" encompasses. Ents fighting for Sauron, or Orcs fighting with the Elves, doesn't really sound right.

I've always wondered if that "wicked dwarves" line wasn't a little influence by his buddy Jack. The Chronicles of Narnia, after all, very clearly divides dwarves along good and wicked lines (is it red and black dwarves? I'm having trouble remembering). Also, how amazing would it have been to be part of the Inklings, and hang out with Lewis and Tolkein at the pub?

More than likely it was an attempt to link The Hobbit with the unpublished Simarillian in some small way.

It has fascinated me too that after the war of the Dwarves and the Orcs (T.A. 2799), the survivors of the other houses seem a bit disillusioned with Thráin due to their losses and a lack of rewards. "But now, if we must go without the rewards and the weregilds that are owed to us, the sooner we return to our own lands the better pleased we shall be" (LOTR, Appendix A, III Durin's Folk).

It takes little imagination to think that there may have been a few dwarves who, with the promise of treasure, made alliances with orcs thereafter, rather than with their own kin.
