Hi guys,
So, I'm reading the TOR in excited preparation for our first session, and I need a travelling mechanic clarified.
Before travel, you make preliminary rolls to determine your pool of extra feat dice which may be shared during the upcoming journey.
Then you calculate the length, difficulty, etc. of the journey and get a number of Fatigue Tests, which will determine how the party fares in regards to fatigue and triggers hazard episodes (on sauron's eye rolls). The TN of these Fatigue Tests depend on the lands being traversed on the map.
Is that right? Where I get confused is the reference to "Travel Rolls" which are made at the same time as the Fatigue Rolls and the use of the term "Fatigue Tests (Roll Travel)."
Is there a preliminary roll, a travel roll and a Fatigue Test?
Thanks!
Travel Roll vs. Fatigue Roll
Re: Travel Roll vs. Fatigue Roll
You've got it all right.
As for the Travel/Fatigue tests, they're the same.
That is, the player is doing a "Fatigue test" (a test to see if he gets Fatigue or not from the travel).
To do so, he uses his Travel skill and rolls the dice. Therefore it is sometimes called a "Travel roll".
Think, for example, that a player can perform an "Attack" and he'll use his Bow skill for it (for example).
Then, he's doing an "Attack test" with a "Bow roll".

Small nit: the bonus pool is Success dice, not Feat dice.

That is great, thanks so much! Makes perfect sense.

Seems like you've pretty much got it sorted. If it helps to have an example, here's a somewhat recent journey: http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?738 ... st19572377
Note that since we're doing Play-by-Post, the rolls are a bit different... the '0' counts as a Sauron, and the '11' counts as a Gandalf.

Re: Travel Roll vs. Fatigue Roll
It's nice to see examples. And I like how you do all the travel at once, since it's PBP (I can see how much more unwieldy it is as opposed to FTF, as there's so many rolls to make, and opportunities for Hope expenditure and APs gained and the like). You'd have an awful lot of waiting if you waited on players for each roll.
