Yet more journey questions
Yet more journey questions
First, hello to everybody!
And now lets go straight to the point. I read the rules for a couple of times, also searched forum archive by Garn and read the articles considering journeys, and still have doubts am I getting it wright!
Let say that the journey is going to be 6 days long and it will take 2 Fatigue tests. Do player-heroes roll these tests straight at the beginning and in case of failed test(s) they increase their Fatigue score at the end of the journey, or they roll 2 separate tests in between 3 days and, in case of failures, increase Fatigue scores accordingly. If the Fatigue score is increased at the end of the journey didn't player-heroes had plenty of time to rest and restore it to starting score, or if it is increased after first 3 days what matters does it make when there is a night sleep that follows? One or two points lost, depending on the season, isn't to much worrying 'cause resting for the night replenish 2 + Heart rating points of Endurance, for uninjured player-heroes. Can someone explain this to me, please? I hope that I was understandable with my questions/states... Thanks in advance!

Re: Yet more journey questions
I think this is one of the handful of missing rules. My understanding is that you can't reduce Fatigue gains from failed Travel tests until you reach a safe location (i.e., the end of your journey or a company Sanctuary); each prolonged rest spent in such a location reduces the Fatigue accumulation by one point.

Re: Yet more journey questions
Endurance and Fatigue aren't the same:
For example, Lifstan, from the Adventurer's Book, got Endurance 29 and Fatigue 21.
Failed travel rolls raise his Fatigue, bashing from the Orcs reduce his Endurance. When Endurance and Fatigue meet, he's tired
BTW, Endurance is easy to recover, Fatigue less so.

Wow! I can't believe I missed that!! Now I need an explanation on how to lower the Fatigue? Update Fatigue Rating on page 145 of AB is not clear to me at all!

Re: Yet more journey questions
Ok. Endurance is sort of a general level of well being and is reduced by exertion in combat.
Fatigue is the level of war gear and treasure you carry and is increased when failing a Travel roll.
As Endurance is reduced by combat and Fatigue increases by travelling when Endurance drops below Fatigue (or vice-versa) the hero is Weary.
To recover from Weary you can raise Endurance levels by prolonged resting. There are two sorts of 'Prolonged Rest'', one where you rest overnight while travelling (say a full night's sleep without standing watch) but this, while allowing you to recover Endurance, does not allow you to reduce Fatigue due to Travelling. The Fatigue due to Travelling can only be recovered by Prolonged Resting in a safe location, often a Sanctuary. Divesting yourself of equipment (putting your armour on a pony for example), would reduce Fatigue and a night's sleep would stop you from being Weary until you re-armoured yourself and Fatigue again rose above Endurance.
Not Wounded
•Rest for half an hour after a battle to recover Heart number of Endurance Points.
•A prolonged rest (overnight) restores 2+Heart Endurance Points
Untreated Wound
•Wound must be treated or healed within 12 hours or hero will die
•Healing roll TN 14 once per day to mark Wound as Treated.
•A prolonged rest(overnight) restores 1 Endurance Point
Treated Wound
•A prolonged rest (overnight) restores 2 Endurance Points
A Prolonged Rest in a safe place reduces 1 point of Travel fatigue per day.
The Endurance/Fatigue sub-system operates as a kind of limiter on players up-armouring themselves as becoming Weary limits their effectiveness in Combat and any other tasks as they lose the 1, 2, and 3 from any die roll (around a 25% drop in skill success possibilities).

It really is quite ellegant way of handling encumbarance when you get the hang of it.
Re: Yet more journey questions
A great explanation - thank you.
Re: Yet more journey questions
Thank you for the explanation. Now it make sense. But on which page of the book is this: A Prolonged Rest in a safe place reduces 1 point of Travel fatigue per day?

Check out the stickied thread in the forum for errata. This one was added by Francesco some time ago as a clarification of what the difference is in the two types of Prolonged Rest.
