Providing local information to heroes

Have any Loremasters provided a local map and background/information for the areas around their heroes 'home' area?

I'm thinking those small maps with example journeys in the LM book would make ideal local information for various heroes paired with either information from the LM book or Heart of the Wild/Tales from Wilderland.

I'm considering giving players a single page with 'their' map and local information/legends as part of character creation.

I do that exact thing. My players get a PDF of their region( s) with a map or maps (edited from Heart of the Wild) and A very sanitized version of the write up from HotW.

Yes, I recommend this as well. I've done this for years with previous rules I ran in Middle-earth & intend to do so for ToR. It works well, & adds flavor that your players will enjoy. Another possibility is to use bits of Tolkien's maps, such as Thrór's Map or those that his son or Pauline Baynes so laboriously & beautifully compiled.

My father replicated Thorin's map ages ago when I was a wee lad in a local theater production of the Hobbit. He recently uncovered it, framed it and brought it to me. Will definitely use in my games. Pics at http://threat-detected.com/2013/10/07/thorins-map.aspx
