I found out about Adventures over the Edge of the Wild just today. Been on a new RPG kick the last few months.

The game sounds really nice, but I've seen several complaints about the bindings, and that the books start falling apart quickly.

Now, I'm not a fan of PDF's, as I have to print them off any way, and I like pre-made maps, so that is out.

How is your experience with the books? I'm an old GURPS player, and I know all about books falling apart, but not really interested in doing that again.

Yes, the originals do seem to fall apart - mine are already in trouble & I'm very careful.

That said, however, they apparently printed an additional run that holds up better (according to some of the previous posts).

On that note, let me say how well they capture the feel of Middle-earth with this game. I've waited more than 30 years for a company to adapt this wondrous setting to the RPG table, & IMHO they get it right. So, please consider checking it out. Even if you decide not to play, you'll love reading the books if you're a Tolkien fan.

My first Adventurer’s Book began falling apart during the first read-through. I contacted Cubicle 7 and they sent me a replacement, no problems there.

My second Adventurer’s Book was doing better, but now it’s falling apart completely. I’m going to bring my books to a bookbinder and ask her if she can bind both the Adventurer’s and Loremaster’s Books into a single hardcover.

That being said, the books are gorgeous. The PDFs cannot do the art style justice. And if there is indeed another printing with better binding, go for it. If there are problems, contact Cubicle 7, I’m sure they’ll sort it out, like they did for me.

Unfortunately my copy (bought about 2 months ago) started falling apart as soon as I opened it - first time I opened the book, the binding started to split. I've taken to just reading the PDFs and leaving the physical books in the box.

Haven't sent it back because I can't be bothered with the hassle just to find that the replacements fall apart just as quickly. I had the same thing with the first edition of Midnight, which got sent back three times before I just gave up and told them to keep it.

There is indeed a known binding issue with a very small percentage of the print run of Adventures Over the Edge of the Wild. It's still standing at way less than one percent after two years.

There has been no additional print run (the first one was very large, though it is now coming to an end).

As noted in the customer service section we offer a free replacement service for anyone unlucky enough to get a slipcase with faulty bindings. We just ask for proof of purchase, a photo of the damage, and your address and we ship them out right away.

Though I didn't realise getting a replacement was so simple - not that I'd looked I could just do that.

Probably the easiest way - I'm in Falkirk, so a bit of a trek to the Granite City. If you'd been in Glasgow or Edinburgh I could have delivered it myself.

I'm very impressed to have an employee comment on the concern. I'll check up on the customer service section and see how long I have to determine, if I purchase the books, to see if a problem shows up.

Just to offer a counter-anecdote, I have two copies of the game and no binding issues with either book in either set. So this issue, while it exists, does not affect all copies, as Jon noted above.
