Well, I'm not sure the timeline is that set on when Saruman started recruiting. He certainly hadn't gone into full swing as early as DoM starts, but a particular individual or three? Sure, that sounds believable.

Another possibility is simply that the Man of Dunland was exiled from or otherwise left his people and headed North because why not? If he can't go home, he'll have to make one here, which makes him invested in the fate of the area.

If any of the other players is willing to work with the Dunlending's player, maybe that other character went south briefly, met the Dunlending and saved his life. Or they simply became friends or lovers. In any case, they'd be each others' Fellowship Focus, and the Dunlending could thus be sticking around out of loyalty.

Another possibility involves the Dwarves of Erebor. Many of them sheltered among the Dunlendings while they were fleeing Smaug. A family connection of some sort is thus very possible between a Dunlending and any Dwarf in the Fellowship. This obviously has some overlap with the loyalty option mentioned previously.

That's a very good idea, with an interesting story behind. Good advice!

The stories of the dwarf's gold could even be a legend told around the fire among the dunledings, distorted by time and distance. A young eager-to-prove-himself dunleding might escape his homeland in search of that fabulous treasure. Probably he doesn't even know that the dragon is already dead, and that the dwarves have returned to their ancient kingdom.

I can't take full credit. The description of Dunland and the Dunlendings in Horse-lords of Rohan goes into that particular connection in a bit of detail. It's an interesting perspective shift from some of the less flattering opinions on and actions of the Men of Dunland. One of their Backgrounds even makes explicit reference to such a family connection (though any Dunlending could have such a thing, not just those with the Background).

Oops, don't own Horse-Lords still. But nice background, nonetheless.

And what about if a Dwarf had saved the life of the father of the player in Dunland? As a token, the father had swore that he will guard the treasure of the dwarf until his return. Now, the father is dying, and give one of his son or one of his daughter the task to find the dwarf who never returned and find his righteous heir or the dwarf himself if he ever alive.

Oathbreaking is really touchy for the Dunlendings that fullfiling it is of a premium importance. They know too well what's happenned to the Daen Coentis aka Oathbreakers...

Having now read Horse-Lords, here is my feedback:

Things I groaned at: We need an additional table now for all the Mounted Combat rules I'm going to have to try and remember! Anyone care to compile one?? Don't really want to have to keep flicking through 'The Horse and Rider' chapter to find 'that darned rule'!
When I playtested 'Red Days Rising' I had real problems trying to recall these rules...

What I loved: The Wulfings as a culture - now I know how I can reconcile the two peoples (Dunlending & Rohirrim) in the Fourth Age!
Also loved finally having stats for the Uruk-Hai!! And I have to agree with other comments about 'Grim Aspect', we LM's will be tested as never before!!

Most memorable character: for me this was Aegid the 'Wife of the River' - lots of possibilities here! Also liked Frana the Chieftain of the Wulfings

We are missing weapon stats for Gazhúr Three-Deaths on page 123. We need data for his heavy scimitar (2h) and broad-headed spear.

Those are standard Orc weapons, found on page 236 of the core rulebook.
