Learn 2 Play The One Ring Event on Easter Saturday

Post by Robin Smallburrow » Thu Mar 03, 2016 1:36 am

Hi everyone, just want to give everyone here a heads up that I will be running another Learn 2 Play TOR event!

Day: Easter Saturday 26th March all day (from around 9am until late, depending on players)

Venue: Conquest 2016
See their website www.conquest.asn.au,
Location: Advanced Technologies Centre, Swinburne University, Burwood Rd, Hawthorn.

Plan for the day:

1. Introduce the main concepts of the game including Encounters, Combat & Journeys using pregens.

2. Go over how to design characters and a Fellowship for the game

3. Possibly run an adventure depending on player interest and time

Look forward to seeing any forum people there!

Robin S.
PS JamesRBrown, as per your advice I'm going to keep bashing my head against that wall to get people interested in this game! :D

Went well, got six new players introduced to TOR & they all said they had fun (Most important!) and 'got' the main rules. No one unfortunately wanted to join my campaign, however...(which is still in hiatus)

Oh well, got to keep perservering!

Well done, Robin. You never know when you'll reap some rewards from the hard work you're putting in for the game.

Robin, keep up the enthusiasm and the determination!

I'll post more about this soon, but within the next few weeks I am going to start up a bi-weekly roleplaying night featuring The One Ring. It will take place at my house in Gilbert, Arizona every other Tuesday. I plan on advertising this to all of my friends and hopefully I can get 4-5 players to consistently attend each time. More than likely we'll be playing through a schedule of adventures from Tales from Wilderland mixed with material from The Darkening of Mirkwood and hooks from The Heart of the Wild.

In addition to this, I am putting together a syllabus for a weekly Tolkien Readers Club that I will be sponsoring. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt published a Reader and Educator Guide to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in 2012. I am using it as a resource in my preparations. The goal will be to read aloud excerpts from the books and to learn while having interactive discussion and debate. We will also explore spiritual applications. I can't wait to see how this comes together. One of my hopes, of course, is that it will attract more gamers to The One Ring and increase our knowledge and appreciation of the Professor's work!

That sounds like a wonderful idea, James. My son did some of his (homeschooled) curriculum on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings many years ago; lots there to delve into on so many levels. Best of luck with your endeavor!

See my new topic on a new Learn 2 play event!

James, a friend suggested to me recently that I should start up a Tolkien Appreciation group (similar I suppose to what you are proposing). In fact there used to be such a group in my city but I found it a bit boring when I went - I am currently looking up what things you need to do in order to get such a group affiliated with the Tolkien Society in England...
