Yes, I should have specified the noun, not the verb. I will edit.Glorelendil wrote:He dices vegetables with aplomb.Otaku-sempai wrote: There's no such word as dices. This has been our English lesson for today.

Although it has become the standard in modern times to use the word "die" for singular, the 'proper' usage is to use "dice" for both singular and plural.
Nonetheless, still no "dices".![Smile :)](images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif)

Adventure Summaries for my long-running group (currently playing through The Darkening of Mirkwood/Mirkwood Campaign), and the Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

It does bring to mind the plural-plural noun "peoples", and I tried to come up with an analogous sentence with "dices" but without luck.Majestic wrote:Although it has become the standard in modern times to use the word "die" for singular, the 'proper' usage is to use "dice" for both singular and plural.

If you had multiple packages of dice, and there were of different kinds (say, for example, Doctor Who dice and The One Ring dice) then could you use dices in the same way that you used peoples? It doesn't sound right, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's wrong.Glorelendil wrote:It does bring to mind the plural-plural noun "peoples", and I tried to come up with an analogous sentence with "dices" but without luck.Majestic wrote:Although it has become the standard in modern times to use the word "die" for singular, the 'proper' usage is to use "dice" for both singular and plural.

In older speech, the plural of person was persons. People referred to a group with a common history or heritage or culture or ancestry; more than one of these groups was peoples. Hence, the "Free Peoples."Glorelendil wrote:It does bring to mind the plural-plural noun "peoples"

I would suggest that all of this is well off topic for an elf-game forum.
