Hi Robin,
If there is a shortage of people in Melbourne playing TOR then a good way to go is to promote at the local gaming stores with a little poster and your contact details about four weeks before you plan to host it, have pre-made characters and an adventure that you can play in 3-4 hours. Going through the character generation process is a time sink for an introduction.
The Melbourne Boardgamer and RPG Group meet up link is
here. I posted in the Adelaide one but have since found about 10 people that are interested in TOR, of which I can accommodate only half that number. I have been lucky with people that want to play.
Another thing I would do is ask for people register for it via a service like
Eventbrite. I do this for most of the university or professional events that I host so I know the numbers and can cater accordingly. I also get contact details during the registration process should I need to send out a message etc. Creating an event is free so it costs you nothing and it will email guests the relevant information and a ticket to your event ... and a reminder for it will be sent out as well!
I wish you luck!
Cheers,
Kurt
