Let's get the Major Oak:
And the Centre Tree out of the way first:
Yep, the Major Oak is so old and ancient it needs crutches to hold it up.

This thread inspired me to visit the White Horse/Waylands Smithy yesterday. They're quite something & very atmospheric. They can get quite busy (maybe because it was a Bank holiday), but once you get off the Ridgeway and start heading south to Lambourn you're on your own apart from the Skylarks and Montagu's Harriers.
I did of course take with me my copy of LoTR:
"I knew that danger lay ahead, of course; but I did not expect to meet it in our own Shire. Can't a Hobbit walk from the Water to the River in peace?"
"But it is not your own Shire," said Gildor. "Others dwelt here before Hobbits were; and others will dwell here again when Hobbits are no more. The wide world is all about you: you can fence yourselves in, but you cannot for ever fence it out."
"I know - and yet it has always seemed so safe and familiar."

Good words to remember for those who feel that there is no adventure to be found within the Shire.
