Legolas And Gimli

Post by Falenthal » Wed Apr 20, 2016 10:54 am

There's a guy in the internet who does great works with his pencils. I think his name is Jon Hodgson or something alike. Someone at C7 should take a look at his work and consider if it might be a good adition to the TOR line. Young people need their opportunities.

Why Middle Earth Elves have pointed ear? There is nothing in Tolkien about that.
Nothing of Worth.

You're right! This Hodgson fellow's a talentless hack!!!

;)

But actually, although I don't think it's ever mentioned in The Hobbit or LOTR, Tolkien did at least imply in a letter that Elves have pointed ears. The quote (from memory) is that hobbits' ears are "only slightly pointed and 'elvish'".

:ugeek:

Edit: I started typing this before the post above mine appeared. But it's interesting to consider whether Tolkien did intend to imply that his elves had pointed ears, rather than just referring to the popular image.

Personally, I think if he said hobbits had pointed ears in an essay, even though he never mentioned it in the novels, the simplest explanation is that he meant it the way it seems at first glance: hobbit's ears are slightly pointed, elves' ears are more so. It's not proof, perhaps, but it's good enough for me. And certainly good enough for an artistic interpretation. :D
Aiya Eärendil Elenion Ancalima!

The name of that picture is "Brothers in Arms" - it's available on Jon's Redbubble.

No where does it say "Legolas & Gimli".

That's entirely you guys inferring.

So he's in the internet. Is that sort of like "in the computer"?

Adventure Summaries for my long-running group (currently playing through The Darkening of Mirkwood/Mirkwood Campaign), and the Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

Jon is an AI?

Ricardo voice: "Lucy... You got some 'splaining to do!"

Pointy eared elves are the standard view ... I see nothing wrong with them.

It's a great picture, but I'm grateful for TS Luikart's comment because it actually doesn't chime in my inner vision of Legolas and Gimli. The Legolas in that pic is too "girly" and Gimli isn't fierce enough - just my opinion.

I don't know if any of you play LoTR LCG but much of the hero art for that game is produced by Magali Villeneuve. She does very different stuff to Jon H and it's a very different vision of Middle Earth but well worth checking out. I heard her in an interview where she rather amusingly recounted that she continuously had to redo her picture of Legolas in the core set because that was also considered too feminine.

Fixed the image with my earlier post (above), as the GIF I linked before apparently didn't work. :)
