Everyone is Invited to the Fun

Post by zedturtle » Wed Apr 27, 2016 12:41 am

So I have a bad habit of going straight to the forum and never checking the actual website (except when a new release is eminent, then I´m refreshing with all of y´all. So this article could have been up for months and I just finally noticed it. But I´d like to say thank you to the C7 crew for posting it, especially in contentious times.

I´ll admit to being particularly sensitive to such things: I was very shy and introverted growing up (still am, though I´ve acquired a set of professional skills that allow me to handle myself in regular day-to-day stuff, it´s still exceedingly rare for me to have instant rapport with someone face-to-face) and a lot of rumours went around about me, causing me no end of troubles that I didn´t have the social skills to rebut or deflect. So I feel familiar with some of the mess that some of our fellow players have to deal with in day-to-day life, and through my ex-wife and daughter have some idea of what some of our other fellow players have to deal with in our community.

If we want to grow the TOR community (which is a subject that comes up with some regularity), then we have to give everyone a way to see themselves as part of the fun. And that takes some self-reflection. For example (and not to pick on any one person), I know of one regular female poster. Maybe there are others, and they don´t identify as such (perhaps due to bad experiences elsewhere when they´ve done so). That, to me, speaks of an opportunity and a need to be more inclusive... to identify more ways for women to see themselves in Middle-earth. That was at the core of my being upset a few weeks ago... business-as-usual won´t do, if business-as-usual isn´t allowing everyone to feel welcome.

So I guess my point is:
Child of the kindly West, I have come to know, if more of us valued your ways - food and cheer above hoarded gold - it would be a merrier world.

I hadn't seen that, thanks for posting it zed! I've only interacted with C7 and its community online, but I certainly think they are living up to their pledge of the fun being for everyone. I've said it before but I think it bears repeating: this community is the first one I felt comfortable joining, and I haven't regretted it once (although I did pick an androgynous name when I first showed up, just in case y'all sucked).

Middle Earth is for everyone, and it makes me happy that C7 works hard to make it that way.

In light of some of the horrors I've read about recently concerning the gaming community in general, I'm very glad of C7's stand here, and I'm hopeful other companies (and individuals) will stand firm with them as well.
Adventure Summaries for my long-running group (currently playing through The Darkening of Mirkwood/Mirkwood Campaign), and the Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

Indeed. I'm not particularly comfortable (or interested) in being an agitator... I just want to be able to throw a Middle-earth party and have everyone come. I get bummed out when I hear "if so-and-so is coming, then I'm not going to come" because I bet we all have a lot to talk about that will help us realise that we're all human and we all like Middle-earth.

In the spirit of this thread, I thought I would share a couple of paragraphs from The Five Agreements Game: A Chivalry of Relationships, Findhorn Press, 2014. Olivier Clerc writes:

"Recent scientific studies support the critical role of play in human society. This is partly because the period from infancy to adulthood in humans is the longest of all animals on Earth. During this prolonged 'childhood' stage, we develop a great number of mental and physical potentials while playing games. With video games, puzzles, and board games we improve our vision, dexterity, and reasoning powers. With dress-up games, we imitate our role models and heroes. We practice being mothers and fathers, cowboys and Indians, kings and queens, knights and princesses. And with competitive games of all kings—from card games to contact sports—we learn how to bring out and celebrate the best in ourselves, sometimes while facing the worst.

Even more important, regardless of age, there is a child in all of us that needs to play. Games are great recreation. They clear out the mundane, stimulate our imaginations, and open our senses to new worlds of possibility. Whether we're going to school, learning to drive, mastering a foreign language, developing relationship skills, or improving our efficiency, games always make the learning faster and more fun. In fact, if you think about it, games make life more fun!"

I was reminded of this thread (and a couple of others) when reading the recently released Adventurer's Companion today... once again Cubicle 7 has shown that they're very much interested in growing the market and making as many people as possible have reasons to feel comfortable playing these games that we enjoy so much.

It is appreciated.

No idea this was a problem in gaming community.

I am fortunate enough to have a steady gaming group running, because in Denmark at least it's very hard to find PnP groups.
