Hodgson cover art spotted on Bandcamp? Looks like Jon--if it isn't, the artist needs to get the hell off Jon's lawn. :D

The music is highly recommended if you need something epic for your TOR game, and it's such a beautiful artefact that I bought the physical edition.

Does anyone else like to use music with TOR and other RPGS? Classical, metal, dungeon synth? Synthpop? Free Jazz? First-wave Industrial? ;) I'll comment with my preferences; I'm interested to hear what others use first.

EDIT: It's a guy called Jordan Grimmer, according to a band member. Looks so much like Hodgson-does-Jackson-Dol Guldur.

Metal for writing/planning/prepping. Blind Guardian, Uriah Heep, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Rhapsody (of Fire), etc.

Symphonic/orchestral for running. Could be classical, could be soundtrack. Howard Shore is an obvious choice here.

A bit 'on the nose' for me, and seems a little like cheating... :D

I don't usually use music during sessions: I've tried a few times, but either the volum of a track was too low, or too high, or I had to take care of the music for some reason while trying to run a combat, or... It has never worked for me, for some reason or another.

But I've tried using instrumental soundtracks, usually of videogames, with a setting related to that of the RPG. For TOR, I've tried the OST of The Banner Saga. I think it fits really well. And Howard Shore, too. :D

Some of my professional cinematic folk music is available at BigBangFuzz http://www.bigbangfuzz.com/#/search/key ... tags/0/600

It's not designed for TOR specifically but some of the tracks have a good vibe for the setting.

Some of my SoundCloud tracks work as well https://soundcloud.com/james-a-semple

... I actually listen to the BBC radio play when I'm writing and prepping, unless I want to convey a specific them or emotion strongly within a scene and then I pick out a track that fits such a feel and write as its playing. Can really be anything though in such a case although the majority are soundtrack music or classical.

In play, when I can be bothered, I have a load of tracks including some Howard Shore, Game of Thrones, other single tracks from films, the LotR Online games, etc. I play these at the same time as running a slideshow of art on the TV. It works really well.

Surely you can't go wrong with the LOTR/Hobbit soundtracks by Howard Shore for TOR.

... I don't know. I find some of it, hmmmm, a bit too orchestrated if that makes any sense? I don't mean bombastic, for that listen to the soundtrack from Bakshi's animated film, but just too 'much' for the feel I sometimes want.

In my opinion, the problem with the Howard Shore soundtracks is, that they often awake images from the movies in the minds of the players. Sometimes this can be good. But sometimes I find it very distracting.
I use a lot of music. I made my own playlists for different settings and moods. I made for example playlists for "Esgaroth", "Rivendell", "a night at the campfire", "dramatic", "sad", "sword-fight", "funny".... This is a lot of work, but it is worth it, in my opinion.
