Something you could do is try TOR. May be there is a store in your neighborhood where you can find some games, but that is difficult. Another option would be to join an online game, that is easier.kdresser wrote:How would the design and navigation of dungeon be done in a more narrative-based RPG like TOR? Without the visual representation, how would one navigate a dungeon...especially one with multiple potential paths to follow?

Re: Considering purchasing TOR
I played a lot of different games in the 80s (including quite a bit of MERP) but then stopped until a couple of years ago. I've got knowledge of a reasonable number of systems and TOR has really different mechanics, I'd say if you've played a bit of D&D but nothing else then if anything you've got less to unlearn in order to work out how this game does things.
I picked up TOR last year but only started running it about a month ago. As I say I'm still getting my head completely around all the rules but my gaming group are absolutely loving it. My suggestion would be get the core book and probably Tales From Wilderland. I tried running the adventure in the core book and didn't really get on with it but the adventures in Tales are perfect. I found the first story quite railroady (once you're on the path, you're pretty much there till the end of the adventure) but it was perfect as a way to learn and teach the system. We're halfway through Kinstrife (the third adventure) at the moment and it's much more freeform.
If you've got players who like telling stories, are Tolkien fans and have an open mind for new systems I'd really recommend getting the game.

Yeah, this.UncleRiotous wrote:My suggestion would be get the core book and probably Tales From Wilderland.
If your group is loving it after a couple of chapters, consider adding Rivendell and Laketown before the last few chapters. There will be opportunities to use that material. Then you can launch into Darkening of Mirkwood w/Heart of the Wild.

Or buy it from DriveThru RPGs or RPGNow (same company, different storefronts).

Actually, clicking on the WEB STORE link gives you the option of going to either DrivethruRPG or RPGNow in addition to the Cubicle 7 Web Store. So, it's all good!zedturtle wrote:Or buy it from DriveThru RPGs or RPGNow (same company, different storefronts).

Yep, darn stupid smart-phones... I think both of us were trying to say the same thing, in different ways.Otaku-sempai wrote:Actually, clicking on the WEB STORE link gives you the option of going to either DrivethruRPG or RPGNow in addition to the Cubicle 7 Web Store.
