I'm wondering if I should even allow him to use this feature in close combat. The weapon qualifies as a ranged weapon, but it doesn't say that the feature only works when using it that way.
I think maybe you only ready the last couple of posts. The rest of the thread (from last summer) is all about that question.

My answer is yes:
- It's so lame as to be cruel to give a player an enchanted weapon and then say, "You can only use it once per combat."
- The only time it's really an advantage is at low skill level, when high TNs are hard to reach and a close combat hero has the option of going Forward Stance.
- I believe it truly is RAW: the rules only say that a ranged weapon is required, and spears are ranged weapons. It says nothing about making a ranged attack.

Thanks, Glor. I'd probably read those earlier posts a long time ago (as they showed 'read' when I clicked on the link), and had forgotten.
Adventure Summaries for my long-running group (currently playing through The Darkening of Mirkwood/Mirkwood Campaign), and the Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).
