Hello TS: For Shield Maiden It says: "If she passes the test, she will add one Success die (up to a maximum of 6) to all her attack rolls aimed at that creature until the end of the fight."

It seems that she can choose how many success die she wants freely up to six, if she passes the test.

No, what that means is that the total dice rolled cannot exceed 6. If you already have a skill of 6, or let's say you have Battle dice to use, you cannot increase the total number of dice you roll to more than 6.

EDIT: It's not phrased well, I now realize. (As a proofreader I'm chagrined I let that go by.) It should have read, "she will add one Success die (not to exceed a total of 6)..." or something like that.

The maximum of six is just reminder text that you can't roll more than six d6s for any one test. You're only adding one d6 for the Blessing. At least that's my reading.

Got it now all. Zedturtle is correct. The Shieldmaiden only ever gets 1 die - the wording is a little clunky - it's a reminder of the standard six maximum.

Take the option that maximizes output.

As opposed to the option that is best for character concept? FOR SHAME.

I guess where my thoughts are wouldn't the shield maiden always choose to max as there is no cost.

Yes but it will rarely occur: there just aren't that many adversaries with Fear effects.
