I disagree: it was because of "Deadly Archery" :D

But regarding armour and house-rules, the one I like best is:
*Reduce total damage of each attack by X.
For example, I used Armor Dice -2: Leather armours don't get a Dmg reduction, a 3d armor gets 1 point, a 5d armor gets 3 points. If an adversary rolls an extraordinary success, only the total damage gets reduced.

AND

*Increase the TN for Movement skills (Athletism, Travel, Stealth) by the same amount.
No more dwarves swimming or climbing trees with a full chainmail, or travelling across the Heart of Mirkwood fully equipped without gaining a single point of Fatigue. Or metal armored ninjas.

The total balance of the benefits/penalties of chain armour was more or less equal, but a bit more realistic.

I must say that, in the end, I dumped this house-rule because we sometimes forgot to reduce the damage/increase the TNs and it became more a nuisance to remember it than an increase in fun.

My players seem exited not to be killed by piercing blows, and I think that it is very fitting for the game that we see heroes done heavier armours more readily when the weapon skills reach 4+ ranks, because they can rely on hitting opponents when weary.
No house rules needed :) Should be in my signature.

Funny how I started the game wanting to change all sorts of stuff, but now I have found the beauty in the system exactly as written!

I needed approximately 1 year of gaming before I fully understood the beauty of the system!

@Mica, I did a bit of digging for you.

This is the "armour monster thread" of old (before the "Deadly Archery monster thread" ). A lot of ideas here

(by the way, it was at page 62 of the forum)

There is another nice idea, by Tantavalist

Yeah, Armour is completely useless EXCEPT for the fact that being Wounded sucks and being Wounded, low on Endurance and stuck in another fight is a good way to get dead. When you're Wounded, short rests do nothing for you and a long rest gets (at best) 2 points of Endurance back.

Or, to put it another way... after spilling a lot of pixels on the subject, I truly believe Rules-As-Written are working as Rules-As-Intended and am happy with the variety of armour worn by my heroes.

I have to agree with Zed here that being Wounded very quickly heads towards being dead.

Also I think in a regular fellowship with 4+ characters you need regular amounts of rallying comrade to beat the attrition of endurance. If one character is getting specifically beaten down then protect companion really can help. That's the big difference with endurance damage, it can be healed back really easily.
