Ooo missed that interview, I was trying to keep my eye out too, just seems to be a struggle to find a good news website for RPGs right now, that covers all bases and announcements.

Yes, the Monster Manual has many creatures in it that should work fine. They're really easy to tweak, too, if you wanted to adjust them up or down. We don't really know if PCs will be equivalent of their counterparts from 5E yet, so I'd be more inclined to use minions like Orcs and Goblins, rather than Dragons and Balrogs, FWIW. :)

Given that they specify you can easily throw in full spellcasters (mechanically if not thematically), I suspect characters will stack up fine on a mechanical level.

Please note that a LARGE part of the game can be had for free, including spellcasters, multiclassing and much more.

You just need to download one more document in addition to the free Basic rules, the equally free OGL SRD.

I don't have MM 5e, but I can speculate based on the 3e book. I've always understood that D&D orcs and goblins are different species and not closely related. However, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't use them, perhaps with some slight tweaks. Middle-earth Trolls don't regenerate like their D&D equivalents and D&D trolls aren't turned to stone by sunlight, but that is easily altered. I suppose that you could introduce kobolds as especially small and weak goblins. Bugbears might be used as Uruk-hai.

D&D wights should be perfectly serviceable as Barrow-wights, Wood-wights, etc.

Winter wolves, worgs and dire wolves should all work just fine. Treants are Ents. Wraiths should be good for Fell Wraiths or even the Nazgûl. For the Giants, I might just stick to the hill giants, stone giants and maybe the frost giants.

The giant eagles seem to be ready-made stand-ins for the Great Eagles of the Misty Mountains. And monstrous spiders can be found throughout much of Mirkwood Forest.

And the balor was, of course, based on the Balrog of Moria (wings optional).

Reference using the 5e MM for AiME...
Tossing all the fluff aside, mechanically it should be fine.
Goblins are Goblins
Orcs are Orcs
Orogs (Orcs) are Uruks
Worgs are Wargs
Ogres are Trolls (with a turn-to-stone mechanic)
or Hill Giants are Trolls (if you want them tougher)
Giant Spiders are Giant Spiders
Treants are Ents
Wights are Barrow Wights (or Wood Wights)
Wraiths are Ring Wraiths (as unclad and invisible, tweek it for clothed).
The list goes on and on...
