This adventure was played on July 25, 2016 at the Southeast Regional Library in Gilbert, AZ. It was our kick-off event for the God & Tolkien Club, a group dedicated to studying Tolkien and Christian themes, as well as playing The One Ring. The summary is very basic. If you have any questions, let me know.
The Misty Mountain Purge - Adventure Summary
Part One: Journey to the North Ford
The adventure began in Lake-town where the company assembled in early spring, 2947. The three members (an Elf of Mirkwood, an exiled Rider of Rohan, and a Woodman of Mountain Hall) joined together in response to Beorn's call for brave warriors to purge the Misty Mountains of the last Orcs.
Choosing to take the Elf-path through Mirkwood turned out to be an uneventful, yet long, 36 day journey. Surprisingly, it was the Elf who failed every Fatigue test and came close to near exhaustion by the time they reached the North Ford in the West Upper Vales. For the player-heroes, it was good that they went without armour or headgear to weigh them down.
Part Two: Beorn's Mission
In a massive tent made of skins and furs, the companions encountered Beorn and had the chance to introduce themselves and the reasons they took on the quest. He was impressed by them (except for the Rider of Rohan who insulted him) and so gave them advanced pay in gold coins and offered future protection and patronage if they should complete their first assignment.
Since the Elf needed rest, the company chose to stay camped at the Old Ford for five more days, reducing their Fatigue accordingly.
Beorn's assignment was for the company to travel south to find The Path of Serpents, which winds through the Rushdown Forest. He told them he believes the path leads to a secret entrance into the Long Delve, somewhere in the vicinity of Eagle's Falls. They were to bring him a dozen Orc heads and meet him in 14 days at the tree on the south bank of Eagle's Falls, where he would be waiting with healers and additional help.
Part Three: Saving Black Tom
After resting at the North Ford, the company left the tents of the Beornings and went south along the Anduin for a day before coming upon a fortified farmstead. From a distance they spotted several men with weapons drawn, verbally threatening a tall cottar wielding a long-hafted axe. As they approached closer, they could hear the captain of these warriors yelling about taking the farmer prisoner to be a slave for his lord. The old cottar refused to be taken, but the men were carrying a large chain connected to an iron collar with which they intended to bind him.
The player-heroes were eventually seen coming and told to mind their own business. Even the cottar pleaded for them to turn away. After this, they were slightly conflicted about how to handle the situation, especially the Elf, who turned to go. However, being true-hearted, the Rider of Rohan could not let the old man be taken as a slave without a fight. So, the Rider and the Woodman drew closer with their weapons at the ready; but, before they were within reach, the Elf turned and shot his bow directly at the captain and put an arrow in his shoulder.
Thus, a short battle ensued, resulting in the deaths of two Viglundings and the Rider and Woodman taking spears to the body. The Elf went unscathed as he stayed in rearward to fire his bow. The old cottar had proven his prowess with an axe, as one of his blows had made its mark.
Having seen that they were outmatched, the captain and his ally fled across the Anduin promising to return. "We will return Black Tom! You will be a slave of Viglund!"
To be continued...
The adventure ended abruptly due to time constraints at the venue, but it will pick up again in two weeks with the companions officially meeting Black Tom and continuing the mission that Beorn gave them.
