Ordinarily, Robin, one can't recover Hope used for Protect Companion, as the 'As a Source of Inspiration' method of regaining Hope is only done for invoking an attribute bonus.

Agreed. I don't think an official reply is necessary: the language is pretty clear. You only get to use it when invoking an attribute bonus, not any Hope expenditure. (I could see some wiggle room if you then wanted to spend a second point to invoke an attribute on a Protection test.)
