Help! My Travel score is 0!

I noticed that some of the cultures start with a Travel score of 0. I don't see how they can cut it in this game with so much travel. My assumption is that you pretty much always have to get some advancements in Travel during character creation. Is this correct or am I missing something? Thanks!

No, that's pretty much correct.
Starting with Travel of less than 2 or so is almost universally a terrible plan.

It's probably vaguely survivable early on but expect to rack up a lot of travel Fatigue. Not the end of the world if you're travelling by boat or with pack ponies but yeah in the long term it will get tough. Certainly on some adventures it would be lethal and you'll arrive Weary.

Don't forget invocation of traits. Depending how the LM interprets their usage then travel checks can simply be auto-succeeded with usage of an appropriate trait and therefore a PC will avoid the accrual of any fatigue associated with such tests.

The choice is to use your 10 character development points in character generation to create a character who is an exception to their culture and has done some travelling (give them a point or two in Travel). The alternative is that the character starts their career as someone unaccustomed to hard travel, and will be wearied by the strain of travelling long distances. Like a certain mad Hobbit who went off to slay a dragon.

Travel is probably the most used skill in the game. That said, the only effect of missed (normal) Travel rolls is travel Fatigue. It's not lethal in any way, and probably not as bad as failing, for example, a Stealth check. Yes, you will end up Weary more often than not, but nothing worse than that. If you wear no or little armour you have to fail an awful lot of Travel tests to end up Weary.
In my Campaign the heroes have low Travel scores (only one with 3, the others 2 or lower; this after 40 sessions of play). Yes, the tend to end up with some Fatigue, but have managed well so far. ALso don't forget Traits as Rich mentioned, and the Bonus Dice from Lore checks before the travelling Begins.
So, in short, no you don't need a good score in Travel (but it's useful to have one).

You don't need a decent Travel score, but you will be failing a lot of Travel rolls if you don't have one.
With zero dice, you need a Gandalf to succeed, which means of course that your chance is only 1 in 12. With one die, it's 1 in 6 (16.67%). With 2 dice, it leaps to 41.9% and with 3 dice it's 69.48%.
Hope can help, of course, but you don't want to use that up too much. So either take 1 or 2 in Travel at the start and raise it once you have some Advancement points, or accept that you're going to be Weary quite a lot.
This may not be so bad if you're the group's archer, as you'll probably get hit much less often in combat and thus lose less Endurance that way, which should compensate for the greater Fatigue you'll have.

Why is Travel so important ? For Travel tests, i understood from core rules that if the guide is doing his test with the Travel compétence, the others could use the competence specific of their rôle (hunt,..). Am i wrong in that understanding of core rule ?

Hi Ghorin, yes I think you have perhaps misread that. Each member of the party needs to make a Fatigue test, which means they need to roll against their Travel skill.

Weariness CAN and WILL kill you if you're not careful enough.
