A "Create your own TOR book" thread :)

Post by Ferretz » Sat Aug 27, 2016 12:38 pm

Let's just have a little fun while waiting for the excellent books C7s going to release soon (Adventures in Middle Earth, Adventurers Companion, the Rohan adventure book...).

If you could "compose" your own The One Ring book, how would it be? What kind of book would it be? What would be in it? What kind of special rules/new additions?

I'll go first:

"The Quest for Khazad-dûm"
This would be an adventure-book much like Darkening of Mirkwood, where the characters follow Balin on his quest for Moria. It would start with the preparations for the journey and travel to Moria. There would be a couple of adventures each year, but like Darkening of Mirkwood, they would be a bit less structured than, say, Tales from Wilderland.
Of course, the players would know that this expedition won't go well, but will they manage to change history in Midde Earth, or will they be among the skeletons the Fellowship of the Ring finds many years later?

The book would be focused on Dwarves, but other characters could also come and help, of course.

As for special rules: details on the dark horrors that lives under the mountain, that Gandalf speaks of in the book. Rules for letting the Loremaster create his own dark horrors. Expanded rules for travelling in caves and dungeons.

Other ideas for books? :)

I would cover the Shire in a softcover booklet patterned after the Lake-town supplement.

The book might start by looking at the history of the Hobbits and detailing the differences between the three sub-groups: the Fallowhides; the Harfoots; and the Stoors. It would examine traditions that were carried over from the Anduin Vales and customs that evolved within the Shire. It would show how Hobbit society is organized: day-to-day life; important festivals and dates; how law-and-order is maintained; a look at the figures of authority in the Shire and their responsibilities. Then it would go on to describe other persons of interest such as Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End.

Another section would provide descriptions of the four Farthings, Buckland, and the prominent communities within them, detailing specific places of interest. It would include information on the Old Forest, Tom Bombadil and Goldberry.

Scattered throughout the book would be such sidebars as: New Fellowship Phase Undertakings (examples: Opening a Sanctuary in the Shire; Receive Title of Shirriff); a look at the Watch, especially the Bounders who patrol the borders of the Shire; and a run down of the Inns of the Shire.

Here's my fast-and-dirty write-up from the House Rules forum: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=4933.

The other thing I might do is revise and organize all of my House Rules write-ups for Western Eriador, the Blue Mountains and Lindon into a single book:
- East Lune and the Hills of Evendim: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=4504
- The West Vales of the River Lhûn: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=4495
- The Shire: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=4933
- Southern Blue Mountains: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=4501
- The Regions of Lindon: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=4485
"Far, far below the deepest delvings of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he."

A Shire book, I think, would deserve the hard cover treatment. So much information there. :)

But yes, a book on the Shire & Bree is high up on my list too.

A War in the North campaign, dealing with the events in the Northern theatre of the War of the Ring. A totally bad ass serious of adventures that build on the events we know of. Would be pretty awesome.

Let me know if you are interested C7, I'd be happy to write it for you ;)

I hope too for a War of The RIng Campaign Setting, similar to DoM, telling what is going on on everypart of Middleearth, with some more detailed information on specific battles, like the Siege of Erebor, Battle of Helm's Deep, Pelenor and so on.

Hmmm....

1) A massive Moria campaign registering in at 256 pages.

2) Rocmistro's secret adventure idea fully fleshed out into a multi-adventure campaign.

3) The Shire, as above, along with a multi-year campaign that takes place mostly within the boundaries of the Shire. Problem solving and social encounters more than combat.

4) The long-awaited Adventurer's Companion, especially if it includes Virtues for Callings

I believe the folhs here already covered most of my intentions (and desires) for TOR book of my own! That's great I'm not alone :)
Well, that said, a first book I would write is Bree book, covering both the town of Bree and the roads that crosses over there, with a look about the cultures that travel (dwarves from Blue Mountains, hobbits from Shire and Buckland, rangers from North and elves leaving Middle-earth or just singing their love for Elbereth). The humans and halflings citzens of Bree would have a lot of information too so as Old Forest and its mysterious legends like Tom Bombadil and the Man-in-the-Moon.
Of course a book about Shire would be something great and very needed, I think. But I would rather create a book about Mithlond and the Blue Mountains, even concerning something about relations between elves and dwarves. Still in the north, I dream with a book that unknow icy lands where thelossoth lives. In the same style I dream with another book about Rhûn and Harad.
Another book of my interest rounds Moria. And also one about Lorien. Not a campaing book. That one would be about War of the Ring in the North and Wilderlands.
Ok. That's it for now.
Hail!

I just want to play someine from Gondor. Other than that, I love the Shire idea. Is there a book that details Lothlorian?

I've got three books in mind:

1) The whole of Beleriand and the Iron Mountains First Age First Age 465 (in between the 4th and 5th Battles). I'd want this to clock in at least 1500 pages. Players would be restricted to human characters only.

2) The whole of North West Middle Earth Second Age 1300 including Lindon, Eregion, Mordor, Moria etc. Again just a mere 1500 sides.

3) Perhaps a little more sensibly Bree and the Shire but at least 150 pages. MERP spent 250 pages on both Bree and the Barrow Downs and their Shire supplement.
