I'm trying not to give out extra experience points. I did give the guys a couple of easy early adventures to get them started but I'm typically only giving out 1-2xp per session. On the other hand they typically end up getting a stack of Advancement Points because they have to make so many skill rolls between the two of them.
If the Heroes are accumulating far more Advancement Points than they can use, you could consider letting them swap APs for Experience Points (maybe even at a cost of 2 for 1).

Or make two Hobbits. Choose Smoking and Cooking as Traits. They'll never need to leave home and will ignore all those pesky adventures, no sir, that make you late for dinner.

If they ever come out of their house, the game has a mechanic where two lonely Hobbits are automatically joined by a slithering creature that takes all roles during Travels.

Much better than the Beorning+Woodman option, and far more epic.

I have run the Tales and some of the Darkening for a party of 2 players with no problem.

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. It seems that the game is more small group friendly than I originally thought.
