My immediate thought was: complication, the thieves who stole it have in turn been robbed.

Those were some excellent suggestions. I am incorporating many of them into my adventure, which is growing into a full scale murder mystery. I will post the final adventure when it is completed. It's taking longer than I had expected. Hopefully what I have finished so far will get me through tonight's session.
