A Gathering Storm: Online Game

Post by Valarian » Thu Dec 05, 2013 12:44 pm

The One Ring: A Gathering Storm - Fridays 8pm UK time
The year is 2989. Balin, one of the Dwarves under the Mountain and companion to Thorin Oakenshield when he retook the kingdom, is recruiting for a return to the Dwarven stronghold of Khazad Dum. The Darkness within Mirkwood has grown to old levels, known whilst the Necromancer was in power and Dol Guldur is again a place of fear and foul rumour. To the west, the lands of the old kingdoms are becoming increasingly hazardous to travel. To the south, on the plains of Rohan, Wild Men struggle for control of the West March - raiding their old lands. In Gondor, the grim Steward Denethor grieves for his wife and faces the old foe of his people in a newly ascendant realm of Mordor. This is a time where a name can be made, in death or glory. A time when a stand against the gathering storm must be made, or all Middle-earth may fall in to darkness.

This will be a game using the Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop, starting in the new year (Friday January 3rd). There are 3 to 4 spaces left in the game for anyone who is interested. I have an Ultimate license, so there's no cost involved. The game will be played using the in-built text chat function. It's a little slower than voice chat but the in-character experience is better, in the opinion of my regular gaming group.

There's a character building session this coming Friday (6th December), with another next week if needed. If you're interested in joining, send me a PM or reply in the thread. You can always send me a character from Azrapse's character builder.

Character creation for The One Ring: A Gathering Storm tonight. This session is where we will be discussing the themes that the group want to pursue and creating the characters to fit the story. The adventures are yet to be written, will you be the ones to write them?

Not at all, if you can make the afternoon schedule that's fine with me. Have another from New York state in the game. We've gone with a Mirkwood theme to start. There's a Woodman shield maiden, a Man of Lake-town and a Hobbit.

Yeah. that's fine. I'm GMT-8 after all.

I'll probably play an elf, if that's cool. I can send you a sheet by PM if you like.

Woodman shield maiden is a Warden, the Man of Lake-town a Slayer and the Hobbit is a Treasure-hunter. So a mix of drives there. I've still got to get some more background from them to state what they're looking for as characters.

Yes, you can send characters as code blocks from Azrapse's website. I'll enter them in to Fantasy Grounds for the first session. I'll be setting up a Google Docs folder for the chat logs from the game, one benefit of an online VTT. I share the folder with the group (send me a PM with email address or join the Google group linked below).

The first theme being explored from the campaign concept is that of Mirkwood.

Current Characters are:
Mavir, The Warden (Woodmen of Wilderland, Warden)
Perry Bracegirdle (Hobbit of the Shire, Treasure Seeker)
Veyren (Man of Lake-town, Slayer)

What is known:
After the Battle of the Five Armies in 2941 there were ten years where it looked as if the curse of Mirkwood was slowly lifting. Since 2951, the forest has grown darker again. Now the forest is as dangerous as it ever was during the reign of the Necromancer in Dol Guldur. There is talk that the Necromancer has returned, though noone knows for sure. Certainly the old orc strongholds in the southern reaches of Mirkwood are again populated. Spider and wolves roam the forest freely. The hunting of game west of the Dusky River is more dangerous. East of the river, hunting will rarely produce an edible haul - even if the hunting party make it back to Woodmen territory.

If there is still an opening, I would certainly be interested in participating in your campaign. I'm guessing there is a strong chance that you have an archer or two and already and I believe you already have someone wanting to play a Wood-elf, so I'd be more than happy to step in as a Beorning or Dwarf with the calling of Scholar or Wanderer. There is one issue that may be an obstacle, as there is a strong possibility that I will still be on holiday when your first session takes place. If that's a deal-breaker I completely understand.

Well, we do have two archers, both Woodmen.

We have 3 people with Mirkwood Lore, 3 people with Orc Lore, 2 people with Herb Lore, 1 with Beast Lore, 1 with Elven Lore, 1 with Shadow Lore, 1 with Folk Lore.

So if you're looking for a bunch of people who kill orcs in Mirkwood while playing with herbs, you've come to the right place ;)

We don't have a scholar yet though.

Race and Class type:
Woodman Warden
Hobbit Treasure Hunter
Elf Slayer (me)
Dwarf Slayer
Lake Man Slayer
Woodman Wanderer
