"The first day of the dwarves' New Year is as all should know the first day of the last moon of Autumn on the threshold of Winter. We still call it Durin's Day when the last moon of Autumn and the sun are in the sky together." - Thorin Oakenshield

My understanding is that a rare Black Moon occurs on September 30, 2016, when a a second New Moon falls within the same month. If we count Midyear's Day as our June 22 then winter, as reckoned by the dwarves, should begin on our October 22, making October 1 the dwarves' New Year in our Gregorian calendar. My personal reckoning would put the New Year at October 21 as I consider June 21 to better represent the Midyear's Day of Shire Reckoning.

Now, is October 1 also a Durin's Day? Yes, it seems so:

- Sunrise: 7:13 AM; Sunset: 6:56 PM
- Moonrise: 7:41 AM; Moonset: 7:31 PM

Happy Durin's Day! Put the ripe meat on the spit and break out the malt beer!

The Dwarves' New Year for next year, 2017, seems to fall on October 20. Check the sun and moon times to see if it is also Durin's Day.

Cheers to you all, and drown your beards in your favourite ale!
And to the memory of Khazad-dûm and Gundabad!
