Dunedain in Rhovanion

How do you think a Dunedain would interact with the people in Rhovanion? Especially the Woodmen and the Beornings in the vales. I don't think the Dwarves would care much about his heritage. Elves would obviously be friendly towards him. Yet I think a Dunedain would keep his identity to himself and pose as a Woodman with a fake name when he is in the Vales of Anduin. I think even revealing that he is from the west of the mountains might raise some questions that he would like to ignore.

I think he would like to keep his personal information mostly to himself since the spies of the Enemy would be quite active in the region and knowing a Dunedain wandering around can cause some trouble.

Or am I thinking wrong? I am planning to play a Dunedain character in a campaign soon and I was thinking to hide his real identity and pose as a Woodmen to the rest of the group and the world. What do you think?

It would be a misdeed to hide his true origin?

Just say where are you and let roleplay the result. I think the GM have a huge responsibility here.

I feel it the same way, farinal.

With the Eye of Mordor's rules, I would think it's quite clever to care about your identity when you're a Dunedain (I think that's part of their culture now, not sure about the High Elves though...). Because revealing yourself could bring rumors and hope back to life. Like Aragorn did, it can be a powerful strategy, but it needs to be done at the right moment with the right people.

As a LM, I wonder if I should increase the attention of the enemy when a Dunedain reveals his true culture the "bad way" (creating rumors that can be travel far away, and be heard by spies). As a Dunedain, you have to entrust your origins to the right persons.

That said, there might be some people that don't care or don't know anymore about the Dunedains. :)

Concerning High Elves, I don't know... I think they're quite easy to recognize, even with an Elf from Mirkwood at their side. Lights of Valinor shine through them, it can be sensed even by ignorants. You really need to hide with clothes and let the other companions talk, unless you're really sure to reveal yourself because it can help or because as a powerful character you can weigh on a critical decision.

I played one for a while. I used a pseudonym. I would imagine that most rangers have some name given to them by the folk of Eriador with whom they interact, so I thought about how he acted and looked and came up with a name based on that (much like Aragorn is called Strider for his quick pace and long legs). When introducing himself, my character would say "I am called..." and when asked where I came from I would say I came from across the mountains. Our LM had a few characters react with suspicion to this when it was appropriate, but it didn't affect every interaction. The character wasn't very good at personality skills, so I wasn't usually taking the lead in encounters.

I found a big part of making the character was working out with the LM exactly why I was in Rhovanion. My LM was planning to use the Lost Watchtower in his game, so that made for an easy hook. My character had been sent to investigate rumors of the tower, and to make sure it had not been occupied by the enemy.

Would the insular Elves of Mirkwood and Lothlórien automatically be friendly towards a Dúnedain Ranger? The Dúnedain do associate with the High Elves of Rivendell and some among the Sindar and other remaining Teleri might still hold grudges.

My assumption is that a Ranger of the North tends to downplay his background when traveling, especially outside of Eriador. He/she might not actually lie, but I have noted that the practice of using a traveling name is not unprecedented.

I would think so, once they learn his true heritage. At least the learned Elves of Mirkwood, and maybe the "younger" more "wilder" ones would be indifferent.

What was the name your character used? Just curious

Proper name was Turin, Breeland pseudonym was "Hawk" for his keen sight.
