Image suggestions

Post by Hermes Serpent » Mon Dec 09, 2013 10:50 am

I'm writing the follow up to the scenario I ran at Indiecon and at Dragonmeet and need some more images to set the scene.

I use pictures from a variety of sources printed onto 4x6 photopaper that I show the players so they have an idea of what various features look like. Normally I use the material from the rules and supplements but haven't got a real good picture for two things that feature in the new scenario. The heroes start off from Dwarrowhall HotW p56 and travel, or have travelled, to Dimrill Watch HotWp56/7. I guess that the illustration at the bottom of p57 is meant to be Dimrill Watch but I'd like something a little larger/closer.

So can anyone suggest a suitable picture of a Dwarven watch-tower and the mostly ruined city of Dwarrowhall. Naturally CC licencing would be best but anything that will print on a 4x6 sheet would be ideal. BTW the Dwarven watchtower from Tales p153 doesn't really match my understanding or Dimrill Watch or the description so I can't use that.

Old MERP-lore, the one with "The Grey Mountains". If I remember correctly, there are plenty of watchtowers in that book.

Try it!

Thanks, I'll take a look. I had only been doing image searches in the usual locations, didn't think of digging up lore that old :-)

For my virtual tabletop game, I take a lot of stuff from MMOs that looks close to what I'm trying to achieve and then use GIMP to "transform" it into a painting from a screenshot. Seems to work alright and there are enough good fantasy MMOs now that you can find almost anything if you're patient and creative.

That's true, I'm sure I could find something in the LotR MMO for example but they're still recognisable and a real world example or a painting is generally better. I've managed to get a few to work with and am now looking at Byzantine ruins in the Balkans for something to represent Dwarrowhall. Problem is that many pictures include a Greek Orthodox church as well which I don't want.

I've also grabbed a few pictures that will work for the Misty Mountains around Moria that I came across as part of the search.

Just do a google search and click on the images button. Some examples are gaming models or CGI stuff, but there are some really good RL pics out there.

I have some nice ones of the Swiss mountain the Professor describes as his perfect Celebdil / Silvertine / Zirakzigil. There's plenty out there but I was hoping for the TL: DR route rather than searching myself - lazy I guess.
