Francesco mentioned that his had come up a while back and had been resolved so I guess he's clarifying what he meant all along. Again I'm trying not to misinterpret what he said.

Even with what Francesco has said, I think the 'once per scene' (Encounter, Combat, or Journey, usually) works just fine, and prevents any and all of the potential abuses.
Adventure Summaries for my long-running group (currently playing through The Darkening of Mirkwood/Mirkwood Campaign), and the Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

In my game, Hardy can autopass a normal or easier travel check, and offers a difficulty reduction on harder ones. It keeps it useful, but doesn't let a trait completely replace a skill. (And now that most PCs are at travel 3, it is mostly used for the AP anyway).
