The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun
by J. R. R. Tolkien, Verlyn Flieger
On Sale: 03/11/2016
Unavailable for more than 70 years, this early but important work is published for the first time with Tolkien’s ‘Corrigan’ poems and other supporting material, including a prefatory note by Christopher Tolkien.

Set In Britain’s land beyond the seas’ during the Age of Chivalry, The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun tells of a childless Breton Lord and Lady (the Aotrou’ and Itroun’ of the title) and the tragedy that befalls them when Aotrou seeks to remedy their situation with the aid of a magic potion obtained from a corrigan, or malevolent fairy. When the potion succeeds and Itroun bears twins, the corrigan returns seeking her fee, and Aotrou is forced to choose between betraying his marriage and losing his life.

Coming from the darker side of J.R.R. Tolkien’s imagination, The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun, together with the two shorter Corrigan’ poems that lead up to it and which are also included, was the outcome of a comparatively short but intense period in Tolkien's life when he was deeply engaged with Celtic, and particularly Breton, myth and legend.

Originally written in 1930 and long out of print, this early but seminal work is an important addition to the non-Middle-earth portion of his canon and should be set alongside Tolkien’s other retellings of myth and legend, The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrn, The Fall of Arthur and The Story of Kullervo. Like these works, it belongs to a small but important corpus of his ventures into real-world’ mythologies, each of which in its own way would be a formative influence on his own legendarium.

I feel like I recall the Tolkien Estate clearly stating, when Children of Hurin was released, that they WANTED to release the tale of Beren and Luthien as a standalone like Children of Hurin, but that it wasn't possible to do, or couldn't be done in the same way.

If it is done as well as Children of Hurin, I'm fine with it and think it could be good.

If it's just a reprinting of the version of the story with editing and notes as is found in the Histories...that will feel more like milking the IP dry.

I just can't get over the fact that I seem to remember the Tolkien Estate saying the story wasn't in as good a form as Children of Hurin to give it the same treatment...

I sure hope we don't get Tevildo, Prince of Cats instead of the song-battle between Finrod and Sauron...

I had the honor of meeting Dr. Flieger and hearing her speak recently, and she is a brilliant Tolkien scholar. If you enjoy delving into Middle-earth and some of Tolkien's sources and similar tales, I highly recommend reading her work.

That battle will be awesome, though I've often wondered if a cunning LM couldn't substitute one of Tevildo's foes for the white cat that ruled over the other nine of Queen Berúthiel's pets. ;)

Is it just me, or does the name Tevildo sound Spanish and conjure up images of Señor Don Gato?

Not the worst one, though: You are surely aware that Celeborn was first called Teleporno by Tolkien.
Well, in spanish that literally means "Porn TV".
Glad it got changed... :D

Teleporno... it sounds like something you hear in a Finnish bar and instantly get sober.
