Gah, ignore this. I was missing the table right ABOVE the paragraph in question.

Maybe I'm missing the thrust of your question, but on page 167 of the revised rules:
A surprised companion doesn’t get to roll Battle to gain combat advantages (see Preliminary Rolls, on page 151) and is not allowed to make opening volley rolls.

No, it was the "Effects of Initiative" table on 170 I was missing.
