Persuade is only used in the event of Piercing blows, i.e. "Give me back my spear and I promise not to poke you with it again."

And now that I've ruined the joke by explaining it; I do primarily use Athletics (or at least I have when it comes up), but I like Stormcrow's point about Battle also being applicable.

Love the Persuade joke. Fal, I'll be billing you for the keyboard if there's any damage to it caused from the morning cuppa that I've just spit on it. ;)

And I agree with the use of Battle or Athletics. I'd vary them depending on the particular circumstance or allow the player to decide and narrate the action in different ways in order to justify either skill.

This is what I was kind of thinking when I said "...or Athletics." Leave it to the player to describe how he/she is retrieving the spear, and then decide on the skill used.

I envision the conversation going something like this:

Player: "Can I retrieve my spear so I can fight with it?

Loremaster: "Tell me how you do that."

Player: Getting irritated: "Same as I did last time!"

Loremaster: Sighing: "Okay, you jump on your shield and surf down the stairs toward your spear. Roll Athletics..."

The problem is recovering your spear without getting cut-off from your allies and finding yourself surrounded by enemies. You hurled it away from you, you didn't just drop it. And your opponent (assuming you hit him) probably didn't simply fall conveniently at your feet.

Well there's a good point there that spears that hit should possibly not be able to be recovered until the enemy is dead/downed. At least, this is worth the player/LM taking into consideration. Though I suppose I could imagine a good description of a player using Athletics/Battle to pull a spear out of a foe mid battle.

It's such a credit to the system that everytime I think of a house rule that ought to maybe be brought in, just for fun, the rules are often loose/abstract, but well-intentioned, enough to be able to cover them already using the systems as written.

As for actual battlefield positioning, as we all know this is kept pretty abstract. Using a turn of combat in order to retrieve the spear ought to be enough penalty.

"...for each extra Success you can attack one enemy on the way by."
