Throwing & Recovering spears

I can't seem to find anything related in the books or here on the forum. Once I throw my spear in an opening volley, what do I have to do to recover it to use it in the combat? And what if during that combat I use it again as a ranged weapon?

If you throw a spear as a missile during a combat encounter my assumption is that you cannot attempt to recover that spear until the combat is resolved unless you flub and essentially drop the spear near to you.

You could conceivably disengage from combat and attempt to recover the spear, but you are better off just switching to another (probably melee) weapon.

And if you absolutely have to get it back while the combat is going on, I'd consider that a non-combat action requiring a Battle roll.

Yeah, this or maybe Athletics.

Yeah, this or maybe Athletics.
Or Persuade if it hits with an Edge.

Ok, thanks a lot everyone! I'm thinking about equipping two-maybe even three-spears! :)

I settled on Battle because retrieving a spear is less about dodging or running to reach your weapon, and more about navigating the chaos of battle. If you can anticipate what happens next in the blow-by-blow action, if you can maneuver a foe in the direction you want, you can identify or create the opportunity to get your spear.

Agreed. Although I think there should be an option for people with low Battle, and vice versa. It could be about dodging and running, if you have little experience in Battle. (Sort of like Bilbo trying to get to the Back Door past all those goblins.)

And Persuade. Falenthal wins this thread.

(It took me a while to get the Persuade joke. Well done!)

It might also depend on the nature of the adversary. Fighting a troop of orcs involves one kind of tactics; fighting wolves or spiders involves another. Battle may be more important in the former and Athletics in the latter.

Or the player could even come up with his own explanation. Maybe he uses Awe to intimidate his enemy into moving back so he can get the spear.

Is the Persuade used on the LM?

One of my players often throws a spear during the opening volley, but then uses a different one during battles, picking up the first one after the fight. I imagine any of the reasons given, with suitable narration or description, might work.

We do have rules for picking up a weapon (when somebody has been disarmed), too.
