It does make you wonder what the wise were actually doing in that period - espescially Gandalf. You could make an excuse for the elves - who just wanted some peace, Saruman busy travelling abroad and Radagast doing his Doctor do little thing - but what exactly was Gandalf doing during all those years - smoking halfling weed?

Would be an interesting exercise to speculate what he could have been up to - I really can't imagine he was sitting on his backside during that period.

Gandalf must have gone further abroad right - to the lands of the east and south. It makes sense, now what was he up to?

Gandalf was trying to find those lazy Blue Wizards and get them off their rumps to go make themselves useful.

I can't even get my taxes in without filing for an extension, and even then I've missed the deadline.

I can't really fault for Gandalf for looking for excuses to avoid going to DG. "Um...as soon as I finish this pipeweed, k?"

Good idea. We should check Gandalf's other "important" duties in this time ;)

But joking aside, another question remains. Even if it took "only" 390 years for Gandalf to make a second visit to the site, the question is even more pressing. His suspicions were strong enough to risk a visit even in TA 2063. Now that the Evil had returned, why didn't he arrange for a second investigation much earlier? This time he didn't need to build up suspicion and collect evidence to warrant one. The one form the past was still there - with the added one after the return of the "Necromancer". If he already had Sauron as a candidate in mind for the true identity of the "N" in TA 2063, why didn't he act or push the cause earlier after TA 2460? He's unlikely to have forgot everything on this...

That's an interesting question indeed.

Cheers

The joke was kinda funny the first time.....the second time its a bit flat.

Anybody have an "interesting" theory about Gandalf's lack of vigiliance? Would make for interesting background for TOR's Heart of the Wild.

My trivia is rusty, but didn't Saruman stall things for a long time?

Yes, but IIRC it was prior to the Hobbit, when the rumor began (I haven't read History of Middle-earth, Unfinished Tales nor any of the completed novels in a long while).
