Characters with 6 skill can still benefit from Preliminary Rolls, meaning that technically they can have success dice pool of 7 (no reference to 6 limit in the rules).
In AC however:
[Mastery Dice] addition may bring the total of Success dice rolled beyond the normal limit of six dice.
• When making a die roll including one or more Mastery dice, the rolling player considers the results obtained and then adds up the values of a number of Success dice equal to the character’s appropriate rating, ignoring the dice in excess.
So is the limit of 6 for Skill alone or skill with advantage die?
With Sudden Strike the dice pool can further increase by 3 so knowing if only 6+mastery rather than a potential of 10+ dice are rolled is important for all those potentially lost tengwar chances especially if the character is weary...
Success Dice Pool Limit
Re: Success Dice Pool Limit
I haven't still read the part about Masteries in the AC, but the limit of 6 dice is an overall limit to any roll, any kind of bonus dice incuded (see, for example, the Shadow-bane Virtue from the Elves of Mirkwood).
I think it's not stated so explicitly anywhere in the rules, but it has been discussed here on the forums several times and the official answer states that no more than 6 dice can be rolled.

Re: Success Dice Pool Limit
My reading is that it's a max of 6 + mastery dice. I think we've had it explained here before that bonus success dice can't bring the dice pool over 6, and only mastery dice say they have this explicitly stated for them.
Sudden Attack would be the same--only bring the total up to 6, then add mastery dice on top.
Not completely sure about this, but that's my feeling on it.

Re: Success Dice Pool Limit
Right, never seen it written as a max of 6 dice before AC. Pretty certain we had a character with 6 weapon skill before he 'retired' and fairly certain he regularly rolled 7 dice due to the combat advantage. Could have really done with nailing this down.
Also, is the 'or more' seems redundant unless there is a way of applying multiple mastery dice:
When making a die roll including one or more Mastery dice...
Add 1 Mastery die to a favoured skill (Common or Weapon skill). The same skill cannot be chosen twice.

oh yeah, well spotted, cheers (in case you are wondering, I am heading of potential munch).
Re: Success Dice Pool Limit
I've had far longer to look at this than you, Mica! It was something I immediately went to.
I wish I had an answer for your original question. I think as it stands the game is supposed to cap out at 6 dice (+ Mastery Dice) but there might be a better solution.
If Mastery Dice hadn't been introduced I'd have said that if you roll more than 6 you simply take the best 6 but now that feels awkward.
