The One Ring online Character Generator and Sheet, updated
Re: The One Ring online Character Generator and Sheet, updat
I made the same mistake... interesting.

The promised Rules Clarification won't come too early. While developing the character generator and sheet I collaborated with several people and basically most of them had two or three different understandings about almost every rule in the manual.Yusei wrote:I made the same mistake... interesting.
It is even worse when there exist translation mistakes in some localized editions that turn one stat into another, for example in some editions they tell to roll for Wisdom instead of Lore at certain cases, or use the Lore score instead of Wits.
Add to this that the rules are divided in two books, and that there are two different indices, and that the indices aren't really indices, but glorified tables of contents. For example, to quote the Travelling Gear rule in my previous post, I searched for it in the Loremaster's manual, then in the Adventurer's manual. I searched under the T section of the index, but it doesn't appear there. It appears under the G section, along with Gear.
I was luckily blessed with the clarification from Mr. Nepitello himself at several points during the creation of the generator and the sheet, that cleared out all my doubts, and was able to make the program almost rules-perfect. But other people doesn't have the privilege of having the author there to explain the rules.
One of the drives to revamp the program is to add additional gadgets to it that you can use to perform some game routines whose rules are complex, convoluted or unclear. For example, a Travel Phase gadget that instructs step by step what to do, what to roll, etc. A combat gadget to remind to select stances, use combat actions, remind the enemy's special abilities, etc. A social encounter gadget to remind the steps of introduction, tolerance, etc. Basically, an interactive workflow cheatsheet for Loremasters and players alike.

I have to, unfortunatly, agree with this. While I think that TOR is more about the spirit of the game, opposed to the letter of the rule, sometimes things tend to get a bit fuzzy and unclear.azrapse wrote:The promised Rules Clarification won't come too early. If I may put forward a suggestion, I would recomend to add a print option for the character sheet. :pOne of the drives to revamp the program is to add additional gadgets to it that you can use to perform some game routines whose rules are complex, convoluted or unclear. But there exists already a print option for it.Woodclaw wrote:If I may put forward a suggestion, I would recomend to add a print option for the character sheet. :p
Just go to your browser's menu and select its Print command. The sheet will use an alternative style sheet that is more printer friendly.
Even more, if you want you can hide the numbers on the cells that change often during a game. For example, Endurance, Experience, etc. So that you can print the mostly immutable stuff with the printer, and then fill up the volatile values with pencil. Just click on the Hide/Show Volatile Cells button before printing.
If anything, your requests for things that are already there confirms my suspicion that this program requires a manual or a tutorial. :S

I've tried, but the results were ... less than spectacular. Matter of fact I had some major problems, since the whole thing was printed upon 4 pages, two of which contained nothing. It's likely a problem with my computer (thanks you Win8.1 )azrapse wrote:But there exists already a print option for it.Woodclaw wrote:If I may put forward a suggestion, I would recomend to add a print option for the character sheet. :p

Okay, I need to test that.Woodclaw wrote:I've tried, but the results were ... less than spectacular. Matter of fact I had some major problems, since the whole thing was printed upon 4 pages, two of which contained nothing. It's likely a problem with my computer (thanks you Win8.1 )

Hi
Just wondering.
Would it be possible to build a Wordpress plugin from your generator.
I'm going to host a site for a campaign, and we would like to have our sheets online there. And your generator seems almost too perfect for the task.
I'm thinking a version where the stats are stored in the database, and when the logged in users bring up their sheet they automatically get theirs stats.
Would this be something that would be possible to do?

I have no idea about Wordpress beyond that it is a LAMP based open source blogging framework.tstirler wrote: I'm thinking a version where the stats are stored in the database, and when the logged in users bring up their sheet they automatically get theirs stats.

My site already has functionality to store the stats in the server behind a group name and password. It's just there behind the Online Character Server button. However I'm not sure if that fits your needs or you need Wordpress integration for any particular reason.
If you could explain yourself more deeply it would be great.

Thanks for that quick response.azrapse wrote: I have no idea about Wordpress beyond that it is a LAMP based open source blogging framework.

Wordpress has evolved to be more a CMS than just a blogging framework through the years. But I won't go into that here.
What I was thinking was that I want to integrate it with the site I'm running so that the players, or maybe just the GM can keep the stats on the page but. But ideally not have to be dependant on another site.
My plan with the site is to have it as a place to both host the character-sheets and to have a map of where we've been, and a log of what has happened.
I could try to build a page per user that has the required boxes, but I thought I would perhaps not have to invent the wheel again.
In short:
Is there a way to have the sheet talk directly to a database of a site, and store several different characters. With the possibility of having a page with the sheet and description per character that the other players can also check out.
Re: The One Ring online Character Generator and Sheet, updat
You can always talk to my server backend in the same way that my HTML+JS frontend does talk to it to bring and store characters.tstirler wrote:Is there a way to have the sheet talk directly to a database of a site, and store several different characters. Characters are stored as JSON text in the server database. I guess you can manage with that representantion of the information to transform it to whatever you need or apply it directly.
There are a few public API methods you can use to list, add or update, get, and delete a character.
For example, a POST request to http://azrapse.es/torserver/characters/ajax_list_own passing username=the username of the owner and password=the password of the owner, will return a list with all the characters from that user. While a request to http://azrapse.es/torserver/characters/ ... _character with username, password and characterName parameters with return the JSON of the character with all his or her stats.
If you have any idea what I am talking about and see yourself capable of workingout the middleware, we can go on with this discussion. Otherwise, it fear it would involve me digging thru a lot of documentation on a CMS I don't know and for which I would have little use myself. :/
