Supplementary XP

It’s stated that the Company is rewarded with a number of Supplementary XP. Does this mean that there are (for example) 2 Supplementary XP, and those are divided among the heroes, based on how the player played her character?

Or is this a number of XP up to 1 per 2 sessions, given to each hero based on how the player played her character?

Thanks a lot!

Without looking it up I thought the supplementary XP was for things like advancing the plot as well as great roleplay. And I've always assumed that everyone who participated got the XP and only players no-showing didn't partake of any and it's always per hero and not shared or improvement would be too slow I reckon.

The way I interpret the XP is an award of 1xp per session just for showing up. Then another possible 1xp for advancing the goal of the scenario. I also award xp to individuals for entertaining dialogue or an exceptional attack narrative.

@Valarian: The regular experience points are 1 XP per session plus 1 XP when advancing the Company Objective.

When the adventure concludes, there are the supplementary XP (1 per 2 sessions of play), in addition to the XP above.

I was wondering about those supplementary XP.

@Hermes: I also thought that it would be rather slow advancement, but I was a bit confused about the sentence about the company who receives the XP, not the heroes.

The relevant section is on p120 under Experience Points:
"Players receive one Experience point each at the end
of every gaming session they attend. Moreover, if the
Loremaster deems that the group has made substantial
progress toward the achievement of their chosen
Company objective, each hero is awarded with a
supplementary Experience point."
p121 says under Company Objective:
" The Loremaster should let the
heroes gain the supplementary Experience point under
most circumstances, unless there are very good reasons
to consider that the group hasn’t progressed toward
its goal"

The supplementary Experience points text on p121 refers to the point awarded for achievement of progress towards the Company Objective and in the earlier section refers to 'each hero'.

The LMB p17 talks of the end of the gaming session and details how each hero gets one XP and one additional (the supplementary) XP. It also adds details concerning the end of an adventure where;
" the Loremaster draws the final curtain on
the Adventuring phase by awarding the company with a
number of supplementary Experience points.
Generally, this bonus should not exceed an approximate
ratio of one Experience point for every two game
sessions in the Adventuring phase (for example, a four
sessions adventure should yield a final reward of 2
supplementary points)"

Now two supplementary 'end-of-adventure' points for an odd number of heroes doesn't make sense or indeed for any number more than the number of supplementary points so it must refer to each hero receiving the same number of supplementary XP not sharing them.

So everyone in the group gets one XP for advancing the game towards the Company Object and one for turning up to play plus a variable number at the end of the adventure prior to a Fellowship Phase.

I would award supplemental experience points to each member of the Company, unless a particular player had very obviously not contributed.

Yes, this does mean that if your character dies half way through the adventure and you bring in a new one you still quip alive for a full share. If you missed many sessions or did not involve yourself in sessions, eg sat in the corner reading comics, then you would not qualify for supplemental experience.

Years ago in a different game I would customarily award between one and three experience points per session. One for showing up and participating, one if you showed good roleplaying, and one if you could show something your character learned in the session.

I'd point out that you get AP for learning by failing in TOR rather than XP so it's linked to your Common skills rather than just participating when XP are handed out.

Dying part the way through a session normally means a loss of AP and XP accrued by that hero unless you inherit through the Dalish Birthright Virtue or benefit from the Heroic Heritage replacement feature LMB120.

I think that if you fail spectacularly in combat then you should get an XP point as a learning experience, in the same way as APs are awarded for failing spectacularly with common skills. Especially if the GM uses the Eye coming up as an excuse to throw complications at a player.
