That's a pretty interesting insight right there Terisonen and one that had evaded me until I read your post. That Encumbrance attributed to treasure could also be psychological or spiritual might go some way to explaining the increasing burden of the One Ring as Frodo grew to realise it's power and importance in the grand scheme of things. In gaming terms of course....

Cheers everyone for your help, think I've a better understanding of both treasure and encumbrance now!

I tend to consider encumbrance from generic treasure only between where it was found and the next fellowship phase or appropriate location where it can be converted into non-encumbering mass such as letters of credit and favours owed or sent home etc unless they actually want to endure the extra encumbrance. Basically I am not overly concerned about it.

As for precious objects, these should have an appropriate encumbrance probably zero to 1 point unless they have some mystical value (the One Ring).

This is why characters have a standard of living. Use this for giving them access to needed money to cover expenses as they move about and whether they should be allowed to tap the treasure reserves on the fly (authentic letters of introduction and credit).

A character with 20 treasure but marshal standard of living should be considered to have his treasure elsewhere or in an non-accessible form when adventuring unless he is specifically taking the encumbrance. Make characters upgrade their standard of living if they want to use their generic treasure (not specific baubles) outside of any sanctuary.

That said you can use Long Lake and go into all the exact detail of coins, but really, why bother, the mechanics support ignoring them.

I seem to remember someone doing a bit of a list of Treasure Hoards from DoM which may help. Will have to see if I can dig it out.

Terisonen wrote:Encombrance in TOR not exactly represent weigh or size but merely the burden you have to travel with and care of. Sure, to have a handful of gold coin is more concerning than to put them in your pocket and happily return home.
That is perhaps a bit too philosophical for my blood. I've never thought the Encumbrance rules worked very well regarding treasure (coins and gems in particular). It does help to remember that silver coins would be far more common than gold.

True, it is specifically said that gold coin are preciously hoarded. The big majority of treasure is silver.

In AiME, the basic rules actually use coins instead of the Standard of Living/Treasure Point system TOR uses. However, I think penny-pinching and penny-counting gets in the way of gameplay which is why I've opted to skip coins altogether and go with SoL/TP instead.
