Greetings,
I'm planning to give one of the main antagonists in our campaign the Great Might (Special ability of powerful enemies).
But when I read the description, "A Great success becomes an ordinary success..." Then I started wondering if a Called Shot then required an Extraordinary Success to be successful?
If the Called Shot is successful even if the attack is reduced to an ordinary hit, then why wouldn't you try called shots on every attack?
Any insights would be helpful. Thanks

Re: Great Might - Called Shots
The rules for called shots dictates that a hero needs at least one Tengwar rune. Note that it doesn't say anything about a Great success, just the rune is required. (Below are the rules from pg 178)
The roll for a called shot is resolved normally, with the
following differences:
• A called shot hits only when the roll matches or
beats the Target Number set for the attack AND
the player obtains at least one ñ icon on his rolled
Success dice.
If the roll result doesn’t produce any ñ icons, the attack
misses altogether (even if the total result matches or beats
the attack TN).
So, when attacking a foe with Great Might you need those Tengwars to hit (or you need to be lucky with a Gandalf). The called shot effect is successful even if you only roll one Tengwar (turning the hit from a Great to an ordinary hit). So, to answer your question: yeah it would be wise to make Called shots all the time. This would be RAW, but you could of course house rule it and require 2 Tengwars to succeed with a called shot if you want the foe to be really powerful.

Dunkelbrink has it right, but I'm digging the idea of another special ability that makes Called Shots against such a creature require an Extraordinary Success....

That sounds like an ability that should be Wreathed in Shadow and Flame.Glorelendil wrote:Dunkelbrink has it right, but I'm digging the idea of another special ability that makes Called Shots against such a creature require an Extraordinary Success....

Thanks, I agree the text says Tengwars. I just realized that there is one drawback if everyone is Calling their shots.
In case of an EoS then they will fumble and be target of a called shot in return.
I'll save the even more powerful "Wreathed in Shadow and Flame" for later.

Any creature with 'wreathed in Shadow and Flame' requires a vulnerability 'Can't pass'
