Public Service Announcement: Hobbit Tales

Post by Jon Hodgson » Thu Feb 23, 2017 4:00 pm

We recently sold out of Hobbit Tales here at the c7 Hobbit hole. We believe there are still some copies available in retail stores, so if you're thinking about picking it up, grab it now!

Is that why there is no guidance for its use in the AiME LoreMaster's Guide? We really enjoy the game at our house.

This is a bit of a ramble, but:
Hobbit Tales was always a One Ring game, and we don't like confusion between those lines - I'm still dealing with TOR fans terrified that the game is cancelled on a daily basis. Which it clearly isn't, and has never been in any danger whatsoever. I mean I can swear on my life that we have never ever even had a conversation about ending TOR. It's just not happening. But that confusion is something we're painfully aware of, and don't wish to add to.

Secondly, we're not a massive fans of retconning something that was specifically designed for TOR to make it work with AME. We did do this in a couple of areas of the AME design process but only where it was an easy, sensible fit. To make Hobbit Tales work with AME seemed like a long run for a short slide, to the point where it would be rather contrived. That's not to say it couldn't be done, or that it wouldn't be a ton of fun to use Hobbit Tales with AME. But we decided against officially implementing it.

And thirdly yes, we also knew stocks of Hobbit Tales were getting low, so it didn't seem like a smart plan to include it in Adventures in Middle-earth.

Though... this does give me an idea...

I love the idea of using Hobbit Tales in TOR games. One thing that made that hard was the fact that the cards weren't equally split between the different hazard effects/Travel rolls. If you have to roll for hazards while drawing cards the joy of using Hobbit tales is somewhat lost.

So, if a reprint is possible, changing some of the card symbols and having a balanced number of Hazard symbols would make me buy a second copy.

Sorry to necropost, but how long will Hobbit Tales be out of print? Not permanently, I hope!

Hobbit Tales in it's current form is done! We have no plans to reprint it. Games have a life span, and Hobbit Tales' is complete.

We are talking about the applications it had as a journey assistant for the LM, so that may make a reappearance at some point, but it's very early days!
