I concur with the other comments, this is a very evocative cover and immediately reminds me of the heady days of early D&D, MERP, and Angus McBridge - though as a typically sadistic, er, fair LM, I can't discern Dread Ubhurz in the battle.

One strange thing is that this thread doesn't have a link to the cover, whereas I believe it's actually linked in two other threads here.

It's also not on the main Adventures in Middle-earth page. [so C7, you may want to adjust that]

Allow me to remedy this (in case anybody later goes searching for the actual image):

After reading some replies, I'm having doubts: what are we seeing in this cover??

Is it the scene from The Hobbit, where Thorin's Company gets attacked by wolves and goblins (and later rescued by the Eagles)?
Or is it the Battle at the Ringfort from the adventure Of Leaves & Stewed Hobbit?

I thought it was the second, but seeing that all heroic figures are dwarves makes me wonder...

Thorin & Co. were already in the trees when the goblins and wolves arrived (well, mostly).

It's the Ringfort battle.

I dunno Glorelendil. I'm seeing a rocky outcropping there, certainly not the ringfort from the map. Also, most of those guys look like they are Dwarves.

I thought they were all dwarves too... Well, except the hobbit just at the back near the fire. Who looks like Bilbo from the AiMe Loremaster's Guide.

I see I'm not the only one having doubts

The whole scene ring to the Ringfort battle to me.
But the "all dwarves +1 hobbit" heroes makes me wonder.

Ringfort Hypothesis
Pros: This is a book that includes the Ringfort battle, which involves defending a Hobbit from goblins and wargs.
Cons: It looks more like a rocky outcropping than a Ringfort.


Thorin & Co. Hypothesis
Pros: The people defending the Hobbit look like Dwarves.
Cons: Thorin & Co. were already (mostly) in trees when the wolves came. The goblins didn't come until later. Also, this book takes place years after the Erebor quest.

The artists says it's a ruined hill-fort. Sure it might look a little different from what we've seen before, but isn't that the point of having new artists provide new interpretations?
